I love your list. Here's another one--Magnificent Obsession with Rock Hudson.

Well.
That's a good list, but you left off one of the best Navy Doctor movies ever:
Mister Roberts (William Powell as "Doc" was the epitome of a shipboard physician).
A movie most miss on doc movie lists, but is pretty decent, is Purple Hearts. Two B movies stars (Ken Wahl and Cheryl Ladd) in Vietnam. Recommended. Also Navy, a doc and nurse.
Seems to be a theme here....

Excellent list. I would add Saving Private Ryan as an honorary mention because of Giovanni Ribisi's character as the medic.
Dr. Zhivago had me staring at Omar Sharif's eyes for the entire movie.

One of the surglings reminded me about a movie she has seen (but I have not), which is supposed to be quite good -- Something the Lord Made, about Alfred Blalock and a man who is not well known, Vivien Thomas.

Ag Doc:
Nice job -- I'd add one more:
The Fugitive (1993)
—A riveting action-suspense film based on the hugely popular 1960s TV show, stars Harrison Ford as the on-the-run Dr. Richard Kimble—“an innocent man wrongly accused” of killing his wife. Tommy Lee Jones earned a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his powerful portrayal of a man-hunting US marshal.
I also highly recommend picking up a copy of the book, Doctors in the Movies: Boil the Water and Just Say Aah by Peter E. Dans, MD.
An internist and dedicated movie enthusiast, Dr. Dans offers up many thoughtful and comprehensive reviews on more than 75 doctor movies.
“I like to think that it’s the best book nobody knows about,” explains Dr. Dans. A 1961 graduate of the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, he says he fell in love with movies when, as boy growing up on the lower east side of Manhattan, they served as his “escape.”

First off, UTSW is NOT the country's best medical school. That distinction belongs to Johns Hopkins. Sorry to burst your bubble.
Secondly, the absolute best doctor movie of all time is "Something the Lord Made", by HBO Films. Its the story of the first heart surgery, performed by the chief of surgery at Johns Hopkins, Dr. Alfred Blalock with the assistance of a carpenter, Vivien Thomas.
Together, they collaborated to develop a brilliant idea to correct Tetralogy of Fallot, and in the process broke a 2,000 year old medical dogma that went all the way back to Galen's famous medical treatises--"no litere cordis tangere" (translation "dont touch the heart")

I know this sounds goofy, but City of Angels with Nicholas Cage and Meg Ryan had some great moments. It was a better cardiac surgery sequence than was in the beginning of The Doctor (also a good film). Meg Ryan doing a bypass seemed fairly realistic by Hollywood fare.
My 2 cents.

How could you not have Playing God on the list? Angelina Jolie. David Duchovny as a surgeon who lost his medical license but is willing to work for shady characters in order to operate once again. What surgeon hasn't had a secret fantasy to put in a chest tube on the counter top of a bar?

How about "Captian Newman, MD"? Okay, so i know surgeons may not have much use for psychiatrists, but still...and sorry, that is a judgement call on my part. Just found your blog...it's excellent!
thanks so much!

I've read quite a few of the Patrick O'Connelly series that inspired "Master & Commander" and was excited to see the movie since I've thoroughly enjoyed the books.
OHHHHH the disappointment! I realized what was missing was a heart-pounding score.
How spoiled am I that I was bored by the gorgeous cinema?!
