First of all you are black but Guy is Blacker I will get you a picture.. Second, I will argue that most of the looks you get are not negatively racially motivated but a uncomfortable, not sure what to do thing. Still a racial thing but not a hatred thing. I think this could be a cool discussion. 2 different perspectives as I might be close to the palest white guy.
Third, I agree most have not talked about it but we have. My girls can bring home a boy of any color. As The Incredible Dr King asked ..... don't judge them by the color of their skin but the contents of their heart. That is and always will be my philosophy.

Gravatar Great post Jaxon. Really, really good.

And Wxman? Babe? We also have to be okay if our girls decide to bring home another *girl* of any color. As long as they love and are loved...

I draw the line at Tom Cruise though. That guy is an alien....

Gravatar Good post and discussion, guys. And wxman, you ARE the palest white guy . . .

I'll back Jaxon that the guy behind the counter watching him thinks it's just a little more likely that he's going to steal something. Sucks, but true.

I'd say that differing faith is a bigger hurdle than differing race, and would cause Susan and I more concern. Race to me is not an issue, as long as both kids are fully aware of the reactions they'll get (outside of California). I'll stick my neck out: Rich and I disagree on the same-sex question - but that would hijack the thread. Just being honest.

So Jaxon, how does the lily-white Midwest get over its racial hang-ups? TV, music, and movies can't be helping. And you may be the only black person some of these people will talk to . . . in their entire lives.

Class is an interesting facet, too. Low-class folks display their class differently, and often along racial lines. And I find Kid Rock just as disturbing as 50 Cent.

Gravatar Thus it baffles me how children of direct mixed ethnic heritage think of themselves as something "different" than other black people in this country.
If they are identified as "black" by society, there is no difference as such from other mixed black people. However there can be difference in the development of your racial identity (on a psychological level) if one of your parents is white especially if your mother is white. I think it's harder to develop a strong black identity (from an early age) if your mother is white although this can be done later in life.

Gravatar Excellent point. And, I guess that would be the dominant deciding factor when considering someone's personal ethnic identity. Whether one parent is white...

Gravatar hey, talk a/b CLASS! There would be no 50 Cent if there wasn't a Kid Rock...or the other way around...I'm not certain. It is all part of the same thread...class, not necessarily race. On one hand you have 'ghetto' and on the other 'pwt.' But they both come from the same s***
Oh, and check out Rule #16 from my Route 66 road trip tips for more ramblings on ethnicity: http://www.mejames.net/route66/i...te66/ index.html
