Werner Patels left the following comment on blogger. It got nuked when I upgraded to haloscan:
This is nothing. A failed Liberal candidate is currently going around threatening to sue all bloggers who quoted from a Globe and Mail article about him. In fact, he is accusing bloggers of various defamatory offences -- all of which, of course, have been committed by the Globe and Mail (if defamatory they are in fact), but he is threatening to sue bloggers for actions taken by a third party (i.e., Globe and Mail).
Liberals are quite desperate these days -- the only way out for them, as they see it, is sue anyone who writes the truth (that includes Gerard Kennedy, who is suing a National Post over a truthful and acccurate story, which recently confirmed by a lengthy CBC report).
Let those Liberals sue -- they'll all end up in hell anyway, and that includes Taft.
For the record, I have received many emails from Liberals in Alberta for a year and a half, and each one tells me that they don't want Taft as leader because he's a moron (I can vouch for that: after a personal one-on-one meeting with Taft, I know for a fact that he's not quite there).
I don't know why people think that they have to send me their intra-party complaints about Taft, but they do.

The threat of legal action in this case is, of course, an empty one. As bloggers, we publish our thoughts, and it is common and established practice to quote other bloggers. That's not actionable. If he changed his mind, or feels that he shouldn't have written the piece in the first place, then it's his fault, but his original post is fair game for anyone.
Newsflash for Hayer: even if he deletes it from his blog, it will always be accessible through Google and other services that keep full copies of everything ever published online.

It is interesting that a former Liberal candidate is threatening a group of bloggers with legal action for quoting from a Globe and Mail piece. Raising the spectre of litigation seems to be a fairly common tactic in Liberaldom whenever a Liberal wants to silence criticism - think Warren Kinsella.
Perhaps Hayer was threatened with litigation by some of Taft's heavies for writing his January 4, 2007 post, and that is why he is trying to make it disappear.
I hope Hayer drops by soon to set the record straight.

Well lets just settle this whole thing.
First the legal threat was an empty threat, I won't deny it.
Secondly, you said that I wanted Kevin Taft's head. No I don't want Taft's head. I still think he is a good leader of the party. I was quite disturbed that comment and would like to get that removed.
I do agree that I said, if we wanted the premiership we should ponder a new leader. Except, that was until I realized how unsteady Ed Stelmnach is. Next to Stelmnach, it is possible that Taft would be able to take over
Next point, I changed my blog URL because an advertising company hijacked it. I constantly got advertisements in my comment box. So to fix it by changing the URL. So far it has solved the problem. Don’t believe me, if you had gone to my blog a few weeks after you would have gotten an advertisement page.
Finally, I have never run as a candidate for the Liberal Party of either Alberta or Canada.
Now you continue your smear campaign on a Calgary Area Student and look like a fool doing it. Otherwise you can pull this smear campagin and focus on real issues.

Aman, the phrase "calls for Taft's head" is a dysphemism - not to be taken literally.
Besides, after Taft loses the next election to slow Eddie, there will be all sorts of people calling for his head.
Maybe you should have stuck with your original position. That way, you could have boasted to your Liberal buddies how you were on the right side of the issue all along.

Well enough of my liberal buddies are on that side anyways. For me to stay over there, I would just be confirming their views. I tend to sit on the fence about Taft's leadership.
Now will you stop this smear campagin agianst me?

I didn't know that there was a "fence position" with respect to Taft. With Taft, there's only one position to take ....

This blog doesn't engage in smear campaigns. The dissatisfaction with Taft's leadership amongst the Liberal rank and file is a legitimate story, and I intend to continue posting on it in future.
You should be proud to have spoken out on this. Instead, you turtled, after Taft's goons started pressuring you to delete your January 4, 2007 post.
