Hi Alda,
On your list I'd go for Beyonce. My own
picks would be World Party's 'Ship of Fools' and New Order's 'Bizarre Love
Triangle'. It's hard to beat the 80s !

18. Umbrella by Rihanna... One of the best songs on your list, and one of the best songs of the entire new millennium.

What a great idea! For me, from that list it would have to be Suffragette City, also the source of my blog nickname ("Didrooglie" -- a mis-hear of "Hey Droogy" ~ don't crash here...). Though the inclusion of Billie Jean reminds me of the summer of '84, driving a friend over the Lions Gate Bridge, and when BJ came on the radio I had to turn it up, fully admitting to this guilty pleasure -- and he confessed the same. It's just one of those songs.

I reckon it's got to be Hips don't lie or objection- Shakira just makes me wanna shake my booty!!! Billi Jean is also solid!
I think you should listen to them all, and the one that make you dance the most- is the one you should go for!

What?!? no, Rollin`Stones? (sigh)
If "Thriller" doesn`t do it for you, there`s little hope. If there`s little hope, "Shout" by the Isley Brothers, can make a dead man dance!

From your list, "let's go crazy" pips "hey ya" and "misty mountain hop" by a small margin.
My off-the-list vote goes to "show your hand" by Super Furry Animals.

From your list, I'd choose "Suffragette City."
Off the list, I'd use Rihanna's "Shut Up and Drive."
What a fun idea!

Your Bowie and Shakira selections are good.
Away from the list (and as summer is fast approaching) In The Summertime by Mungo Jerry is a sunny song that'll get your foot tapping. I'd also probably go for a favourite of mine: All Right Now by Free.
Whatever, rock on!

Almost on your list would be Purple Rain. Why is it not on your list btw if you have the cd on there? Im trying to understand but my OCD keeps getting in the way...
Whats not on your list and should be (being that EPD´s club is all about new and inspiring music) is Arcade Fire. If you can download it via itunes or something (dunno if it works back home but here its 99c per song), try Haiti or Wake Up or Rebellion. Very very awesome party songs. Best part - they´re Canadian!

Hey everyone - thanks for the votes and kind words and commentary. Fascinated to see what people choose. If I'm not mistaken, Shakira is in the lead, closely followed by Hey Ya! and Billie Jean ( a handful of people have also voted by email).
RK, Purple Rain is good, but it doesn't make me want to dance! I've heard excellent things about Arcade Fire but - as you say - we can't download from iTunes here. Which should probably be the subject of a lengthy rant post.
Asta,
Good idea but I think by the time I got to no. 10 I'd probably be dead on my feet. So that wouldn't be fair.

Hey Alda,
That's a great list but it is also mainstream. If I had to pick from the list, then I would go with the Zep; just a personal preference from halcion days of kickin it old school.
If the idea is to introduce the gang to something they haven't heard before I wouldn't choose any of them. I would, however, recommend a great French jazz group I discovered recently in Quebec called Les Pommes de ma Douche, who, as fate would have it, just released their fourth album. They are a string quartet with one accordianist - no percussion. You could pick almost any of their songs to get up an cut a rug - if you like jazz with a gypsy style. I could also suggest a bit of good ol' american bluegrass. Nickel Creek has some foot stompin music that gets one up and groovin'. Nickel Creek's mandolin player, Chris Thile, also has some cool solo stuff. If you want something a little more mainstream, but still outside the pale of the average top 40 list, Sanata has done some great work recently with more "contemporary" musicians Like Rob Thomas (smooth), Dido (Feels Like Fire), and POD (America); just to name a few. I could go on and on and on and on, but you have to choose today and that doesn't leave much time.

Let's Go Crazy. Got to get the votes up for Prince.
No George Michael on the list?? Freedom. A classic.
A guaranteed make you get up and dance tune - Sexual Revolution by Macy Gray.

Sigrún Erla,
I love Moloko but I have NOTHING of theirs on my iPod. A scandal!
Thanks for the reminder, though - I've been meaning to get Roisin Murphy's new CD.
gary,
Sure, I can do that!
Thanks everyone - I love your suggestions - both those on-and-off my list.

Thanks Alda. Music is something of a passion/obsession for me and I am always on the look out for something new. EPI and his group have a bang up idea with their little group. If I were 'back home' in Niagara, I'd have no problem doing something similar with a group of guys I grew up with down there. Up here, with its transient population, it is a little more difficult. Thankfully, with satellite music, t.v., and internet, it is a passion that I can continue to foster. It was Nietzsche who wrote, ‘Life without music would be a mistake.’ or something to that effect. I don’t know if it was in his lucid period, or not, but I concur with his thoughts regardless.

Hi Alda,
From your list it would have to be Beyonce - five yrs old and that song still rocks every time it comes on the radio!
If I was plumping for Shakira it would be "Whenever, Wherever".
From my own Ipod - it would definitely change from week to week, and right now I am LOVING The Eurythmics - Love Is A Stranger!!
Looking forward to hearing the playlist - what a cool idea for a night with friends.

luigi! Hello, nice to have you with us again (I think). And as before, I don't understand a word of what you've written.
Hazel,
I had a Eurhythmics obsession for about two years back in the late 80s. I haven't heard that song in ages - I want to listen to it now ...

You want me to dance to it? Then my one quarter gets spent on Bob Seger's "Old Time Rock and Roll". (Wasn't that the one featured in the movie "Cocktail"?)
From your list I pick Shakira's "Hips Don't Lie" to dance to. David Bowie's "Suffragette City" is barreling-down-the-highway music. Too fast and loud for a dance floor.

Sleeper in Metropolis - Anne Clark

I want to say Kate Bush because it provokes the most primeval feelings and is frankly the most meaningful artist on the list (but not necessarily for dancing). As far as the list goes, Im sorry but there is nothing that makes me really want to dance. Could I suggest something from Spearhead, (maybe something off their "Home" Album). I have had a few parties and nothing gets people to dance more than them.
