While it's clear that he was taking very special care of you, at least it shows what the restaurant is capable of.
I do wonder if this invitation would have been forthcoming if you had simply written him a letter about your previous experience instead of sharing it on the Internet.

A good story, now I really want to go back to Iceland and try the place out.
I had a few good dinners there, and a few hot-dog type meals as well!

Hildigunnur,
That's good.
Cat,
Yes, to the first part of your comment. Hard to say about the second.
mary,
Good idea. Send your friends, too.

Southern England is a little to far away to visit this restaurant for an evening meal, but if I ever go to Niceland then I know where I'll eat.
I like the remark about flawlessness being a starting point.

It's always so refreshing when someone takes constructive criticism to heart without getting all bristly and defensive.
That said, offering to make amends was a very smart business move--you are a force to be reckoned with!
Glad you had such a good time. It does sound like a delightful place.

Hi Alda,
Just wanted to answer your question about whether Australians eat kangaroo or not... It isn't eaten widely as it still tends to be considered more of
a specialty game meat that you would find in a top restaurant. It's thought
of as fairly exotic Modern Australian cuisine ! I haven't seen any kangaroo fillets in any of our major chain supermarkets for a while, but this also has to do with a widespread reluctance to eat one of our national icons ! ( Also known as the Skippy the Bush Kangaroo factor. )Despite all of the information and advertising about how kangaroo meat is highly nutritious and very low in fat over the last 20 years, the idea hasn't really caught on amongst the general population.

I agree with Kathryn but I do think kangaroo is generally well regarded amongst the population in Australia. (There is a kangaroo schnitzel on the everyday menu at my local pub!) Probably the price more than anything may put people off. A very good bbq meat to add to the snags and steak.

Kangaroo and ostrich get popular here on the EU mainland every time there's a beef scare (BSE, hoof-and-mouth).
I'm with Rozanne about their taking criticism constructively, but the best way to deal with poor service there is to speak to them in English. Talk like a Trawnian, eh. They know their fellow countrymen are used to crap service (just like Germans) but they also know not to piss off the tourists. Cynical, yes, but very effective.

Thanks for the review! We've put it on the list of places to try. I've also pursued your other reviews for places to avoid!
I've been watching http://eyjan.is/webcam for some of the last day and I gotta ask - is it just me, or are the drivers of Reykjavik just a bit crazy?

I think I would have liked that meal very much indeed.
I'm especially impressed because it's so hard not to be defensive when someone points out flaws.

What a great example of amazing customer service!
My husband had kangaroo at a work Christmas party a couple of years ago, I forget who the caterer was.
Sounds like an amazing meal. (Especially monkfish wrapped in bacon, I love to make that).

About the kangaroo Alda, I had it a few times in Australia (after it became a "trendy" lean good for the heart type meat). However, when we first arrived in Australia it was sold as dog and cat food only (raw kangaroo meat - twas disgusting but the animals loved it).
Now I can buy it in the local KS and have had two dinner parties with it as the main - and most people thought it quite nice - reminded them of foal..

This actually doesn't surprise me a bit. I've eaten at Vín and Skel many time, never after they moved though as I've had to live sparingly this winter. The food has always been good, often delicious but the service hasn't been on pair with the food. What they've really got going for them though is the proprietors efforts to constantly try and better themselves. I've talked to him a few times after dinner and he is always interested in hearing about what his customers like and what they felt might have been better or different.

Kangaroo is rarely, if ever on the menu here at Jundee and I never notice it in the supermarkets in Perth, but it is quite often on the menu at restaurants.
It's a beautiful meat, however.

Behold the power of bloggers! Actually, he's a very smart man if he tried to win you over. It's obvious that you have a global reach and there are many tourists or potential tourists who will find your blog and take your recommendations to heart. This guys seems to "get it." For that alone, he should be commended.
