Holy! Doesn't surprise me, though, considering how CWS is installed, etc.

Unfortunately the police{generally speaking} do not seem to have a cyber crime culture.
The reason is that most police have not the expertise to even know where to start.
A close relative of mine is a senior detective and I have to remove spyware from his personal PC !!!
Rather than show their lack of knowledge, they tend to leave well enough alone.{or so it would seem}
White collar crime has always drawn lesser attention and punishment than some punk holding up the local Harpoo{sp?} store.
Future generations of law enforcers might address cyber crime with more vigor and gusto ....let us hope so anyway!

What I want to know is WHERE you found these servers, and if there's a way to contact the poor schmucks who are losing their identities?
Second, I disagree that law enforcement isn't clued in. In my ten year career as a computer crime writer, I've seen rapid improvement in the Secret Service, FBI and local jurisdictions around the country. You need to stay on this, approach each jurisdiction involved and ask for their cyber crime agent/officer.
You should also file a complaint and turn over evidence to the Internet Fraud Complaint Center. I know the intake officer over there and he's good.

First I want to say great job!!!
What a find.
So far I can't find what program is responsible. Some references refer to it as a well known malware and part of CWS but nothing specific. I would like to know what it is?

I ended up with the coolwebsearch thing on my laptop, probably after hitting one of those placeholder pages or stumbling onto a porn site of some sort. It was a particularly nasty little piece of malware and an absolute bitch to get rid of. Kick their asses!

So how exactly are you 'sitting' on this data? Does it mean the server collecting illegal data in fact belongs to you?

First off, I want to thank you for your diligence and all your hard work dealing with this mess.
Two questions:
1) Does programs like spybot or adaware protect against CSW?
2) We have a computer at our office that has coolwwwsearch on it. Is this the same version?
Thanks again.

Yes, coolwwwsearch is the same as coolwebsearch. CWS comes in so many varieties. I'm not sure it's been mentioned here yet, but if you've got a variety of it, find CWShredder and use that to clean it off.

I have been reading some very interesting stories and points of view, and would recommend that all of us to take a quick look at a website that deals directly with Identity Theft Restoration. It puts the power back into the hands of the people. You will find it extremely interesting. The Url is www.GotHassles.com
I have come to find from being a victim of ID Theft, that it’s not a matter of "IF" you become a victim of it, but "WHEN". I never thought it would happen to me!

Here's an Idea, find a way to DoS the server, or better yet, find a way to clear the data from it (even if the mean is illegal itself), thus protecting all parties involved, even the pedophile...

It doesn't surprise me that the FBI still has not responded. This is so true it's scairy! Not only is this a huge growing problem but one that I would call an epidemic. In order to further protect my self I researched several Identity Theft Companies. Here is a link to one that received wonderful reviews in magazines such as Forbes, Barrons, Fortune, Financial World, Success etc. Here's the link for more info [link deleted -- no spam policy]
[Leslie, the FBI did respond. While this is a problem, it's not nearly as much of a problem as some might think. Biggest issue is these machines were all unpatched XP boxes -- do your patches!]

The End of Identity Theft; Can you post this on your Blog?
Motioncodes is a new science that has actually been around for thousands of years. For a moment, think about how you distinguish one person from another. What is recognized and stored in memory? How is this information gathered? What sets us apart to make us unique? Answer – people subconsciously signaling their behavioral codes (state of mind) through body language. Without realizing it, we reveal who we are and our intentions. The progression of motioncodes: from the cave drawings of our distant ancestors to paintings, photography, to film, and finally computers-allows us to quickly and remotely (via any surveillance camera) digitize and store human body movements that are unique to everyone-just like fingerprints. Those movements are converted to a 6 digit ‘rotation number’ which is different for everyone on Earth and cannot be deciphered. Passers-by would be analyzed for matching information to establish and verify identity and pinpoint their whereabouts. Probable crimes, terrorism and identity theft can be monitored 24/7 and as result crime would be impossible to commit. Eventually security and law enforcement would be replaced by robots. However, in the U.S. there are millions of people that make a living from fighting crime: police, lawyers, prison guards, private security and the media. Many of these people would lose their jobs. Obviously, the CRIMINALS and the CRIME FIGHTERS would try to stop the new crime prevention technology. We submitted motioncodes to the government, security agencies, and the media and with no surprise, we have received no response! What to do? We are going directly to the public and forming a membership organization ‘The Preventech Foundation’ to influence these CRIME FIGHTERS to introduce motioncodes crime prevention technology and replace the present archaic methods. The implementation procedure – motioncode chip can be put instantly in any surveillance camera. That is all it takes to be protected by the National Prevention Network. Please contact us and we will send you the details about the preventive devices and systems motioncodes@yahoo.com

I think this is great information you are presenting to consumers, identity theft can be a great threat to those who are not aware of the dangers. Education is the only way to strengthen ourselves against the crime, and to narrow the chances that the opportunist identity thieves have to do their crimes. Keep posting the information, people will find it and it raises awareness.
