This does make his tests more interesting although it has to be understood that this isn't necessarily letting you know which system is best. More that certain AV systems do have some areas of wide weaknesses while bypassing that they are good in others. Virustotal is an excellent research tool but doesn't give the full ability of each AV system in checking files.
The results nevertheless do show some interesting results.

Ok. Ok. OK!!!
I get it. I get that you're upset at Consumer Reports for all the reasons that you've mentioned. I understand your stance. I can further understand your frustration that they seem to be ignoring your expert opinion (and I'm not using that sarcastically).
I GET IT.
Now, please, (please!) get over it.
I am a computer engineer by degree (BS in 1993 from Auburn University), worked with computers since 1982, worked for IBM for two years, worked for an accounting software developer for another two years, and have been a computer consultant for as long as I can remember. I DON'T rely on CR for their computer related advice. I do, however, rely on CR for alot of other information. But that's it - they provide unbiased opinions - *opinions* which are not and cannot be purchased. That makes CR valuable - at least, valuable to me. It certainly doesn't make them any less human or any less infallible. So they made a mistake and they're not acknowledging it to your content. Ok, you've made your point. Over and over and over again.
Guess what? I rely on this blog - and therefore - your opinion too. BUT if you keep on harping on CR ad nauseum, you'll do two things: you will lessen the impact of everything else you have to say, and you will lose a loyal reader (and reseller). You once recommended another blog by an Australian anti-spyware Microsoft MVP. For quite a while, it was a good read - until the "anti-Firefox" and "IE is all that great" speak became the overwhelming theme of the blog. You are coming close to becoming the "This is wrong in the world *and* so is CR! for their irresponsible testing..." blog. Please drop it. Enough is enough.
I'm sure that I'm not totally representative of your readership, and the above is just my opinion (with my background).
