Abandonned targets are quite popular amongst spammers because they enable the links to stay up longer plus there's not much of a risk that someone will complain about the message "blast" which could result in their payloads being banned in search engines (or sometimes taken down, if it's not located in a bulletproof environment like Esthost/Intercage and friends).

Last September I happened upon Macvirus.org and found their forum full of porn and other spam. I attempted to contact to do something about it but never received a response. I subsequently notified their hosting company, ThePlanet, because some of the titles looked like possible child porn. ThePlanet responded in less than 6 hours and those threads were removed. But the forum was never fully cleaned up.
