Gravatar yes, this is pretty concerning. it often is astounding how little company pcs are secured by admins and how much, only the software updates, differ from one working desk to another.

Gravatar The success of this defense makes it pretty clear that if you are planning to "do bad things" with your PC you should run it unprotected -- you can then use the excuse that "I was hacked" to explain all the traces of kiddie porn, plans for nuclear bombs, and Al Qaeda documents on your machine [g,d,rlh]

Gravatar I am sure Mrs. Jones who is sixty nine and uses her computer to send emails to her grandchildren is a security expert and knows all about antivirus software, how to update it etc etc

Should we lock up senior citizens because they do not understand computer security, incase one of them turns out to be hoarding child porn?

If there is clear evidence of a malware infection, covertly using the computer as part of a botnet then why should innocent people be put through hell through no fault of their own (perhaps ignorance of computer security)?

Gravatar @ Angus

The success of this (and the Julie Amero) case makes it pretty clear that the decision to prosecute should be left to someone who actually understands about computer forensics.

As with the Julie Amero case, the comments sections again contain the usual 'this will be an excuse for every paedophile' and 'I'm not convinced s/he's innocent' twaddle.

In both cases, the victims need to seek compensation against the people who brought the prosecutions when a proper forensic examination would have revealed their innocence.

Even being found innocent in court is not enough- there will be a significant number of people who still prefer to believe there's no smoke without fire.

Only a ruthless (and successful) compensation action which will a) ruin the idiots who persecuted the victims and b) allow the victims to live comfortably for the rest of their lives and give the finger to those who still don't realise or accept they were totally innocent will finally be justice.

Gravatar @YourHighness:

1) Do not underestimate the incompetence of a "Administrator".

2) Politics can play a key role in the decision making of an "Administrators" supervisors. (See: SOX, GLBA, "Compliance").

Gravatar My name is Fima
I live in Minneapolis, MN
I came to US as political refugee on human rights violations in former USSR
I am russian jew, and I got a lot of discrimination in USSR
My parents are Holocaust survivors.
But I got the worst thing in USA, never possible in communist country.
I was set up with my computer, convicted as a s..x offender for computer p..rn.
I would like to send you some links to publications about my criminal
case. I was forced to confess to the
possession of internet digital pictures of p..rn in deleted clusters
of my computer hard drive. My browser was hijacked while I was
browsing the web. I was redirected to illegal sites against my will.
Some illegal pictures were found on my hard drive, recovering in
unallocated clusters, without dates of file creation/download.

I do not know how courts can widely press these charges on people to
convict them, while the whole Internet is a mess.

I was fired from many jobs, and I am out of job for 5 years.
Also police watch me all the time naming me a predator,
I am not a predator, I came here in hope to escape human rights violations,
but I got copletely terrible violations by government. All of this
looks like Nazi Germany
