Sunbeltblog comments

Interesing... If nothing else, it speaks to your integrity as a blogger and president of a software company whose own product didn't detect the malware contained within.

Are you folks noticing that stuff is getting really nasty lately, from the standpoint of avoiding detection?

May I point out the beginning Quote: "Today, we caught a very pernicious spam loaded with malware ..."

I believe the key term used was "caught" (probably referencing their spam filter). I know the report shows one version of whatever product used (since it's not listed) had "no virus found" (Dean's intended point, I believe), but the quote above indicates *something* DID find it. Otherwise this blog entry would not exist.

That said, 2 further observations:
1) CounterSpy is not yet meant to be the "best" AntiVIRUS software - it is AntiSPYWARE. Alex says "Note that CounterSpy V2 is not a stand-alone antivirus product" and "VIPRE itself will ultimately branch out to become a stand-alone antivirus product..." meaning it isn't yet. Full quote here: http://sunbeltblog.blogspot.com/...nterspy- v2.html This is why I still use products like Symantec (which, incidentally in this report, does not yet detect this virus either. I'm actually disappointed!)
2) My version (of CounterSpy), "2.1.946," is listed as current as of this posting. This report shows Sunbelt version 2.2.907.0? If the product is not CounterSpy, what is being tested? Or is what is being tested a pre-release?

Best regards,

Petar

Gravatar To clarify, Dean is correct, our engine didn't detect it on VirusTotal. While CounterSpy has a small AV engine in it (VIPRE), it's not a full AV product in and of itself. In fact, what we have on VirusTotal should be considered a beta. We release our full product late Summer.

However, you can see the current VirusTotal performance of CounterSpy (and a number of other products) here:
http://winnow.oitc.com/ AntiVirus...erformance.html

These are tests run by CastleCops on live malware found in the wild. They are not necessarily representative of the full picture to include worms, etc.

Remember -- we are one of the few "pure play" antispyware products on VirusTotal and we have not completed our full AV product yet.
