I don't know if it's just bad luck or something, but every HP or Compaq I've ever used was complete crap. CD drives breaking down, motherboards randomly frying, customer service not wanting to stand by their products (I actually had to get the Better Business Bureau involved once just so they would repair something) -- I've never been able to go more than a few months without something going wrong. I avoid anything produced by them at all costs.
