Personally, I'll stick with XP for some time until all the kinks are worked out.
Yup, Vista sounds promising - but we've heard it all before. I'll be sticking with XP for a while, at least.

"people lie, data don't" ... I know what you mean, Alex, but I would like to expand on that thought a bit. Sometimes people present impressive statistics and those data are misleading too. It brings to mind a classic text by Darrell Huff and Irving Geis: "How to Lie with Statistics". The delving you mention should be back to the experimental paradigm itself. Sometimes there are extraneous and/or contaminating variables in the original experimental design. Of course, statistic analysis is not free of experimenter bias, unless things like double blind controls are introduced. And it is far better to have a look at the raw data itself rather than rely on the interpretation of the statistical results.
Yes, I know I am obsessing but it really annoys me when people present the data as the truth. It often is not...

Catherine -- I agree and you're right, the data itself is often at fault... the design of the test is more important

My thoughts exactly. I'm waiting till SP1 at least...
I'm happy with XP. Sure, my desktop isn't 3D, but too much stuff going on hurts my head anyway.....my poor brain has a hard enough time working with two monitors....

With regards to performance, I just want to point out that all newer Operating Systems slow down your performance. If all we truly needed was an office suite and internet access, then no personal user would have upgraded from Windows 98 - which was much liter on system resources and therefore would run much quicker with a modern processor available today. Note: corporate users may have upgraded, given that 2k and XP allows a lot more group policies etc)
So its never been about performance of the Operating Systems....not really. Its about features and s/w manufacturers and whether they support your current operating system.
I probably won't go Vista for a long while yet (at least SP 1 if not SP 2), but then again I have not gone XP either - am still using Windows 2000 and loving every minute of it. I fail to see the need for XP even though there are many XP evangelists out there...

I'll buy Windows Vista on January. There are no reasons to wait for SP1, because updates come through Windows Update.

Actually,
I'm waiting. I'm waiting to see how ingrained all of the DRM systems are. I'm waiting to see performance and security. I'm waiting...
And while I will toy with Vista at work, this may well be the operating system that will have me migrating (fully) to Linux and/orlooking into a Mac product.
I'm not a fan of any DRM software, I understand that companies need to protect their intellectual property, however...I'm also a fan of fully controlling my privacy.
