My only apprehension is the cost. I'm not a skilled woodworker like my father but I'm guessing that Carol might have to use a wood other than pine for the body. A foray into such a new design though would require an expressed interest by several customers to buy one (or one willing to shoulder all the production and development costs of the first). Carol would probably need to investigate the costs involved.

One design concept worthy of consideration and modification is Ethan Allen's New Impressions line of furniture which is a Shaker/Mission hybrid; still very simple and smooth, but a little more robust in build. We actually have an earlier version of the current Map Coffee Table which, IMHO, could become the initial model of reference. I would replace the four drawers (there are two on each side) with just two, or perhaps do away with the drawers altogether.
