Gravatar Heh. Yes, you use the lower case "l" to make a 1.

If there really is no explanation point, I suspect that it's because shouting is undignified.

Gravatar Exclamation point is apostrophe-backspace-period.

Gravatar When I was a kid, we used a combianation of the period and some other key (by backspacing) to make exclamation points. And you definitely use the lower case 'l' to make the number 1.

Gravatar per Timothy's comment, I think he may be right. What is the character at shift-8. I can't tell from the picture, but I think that is maybe the apostrophe, in which case that was what we used to make the exclamation point.

Gravatar God, I love the internet...

Thanks everyone!

Gravatar I have to admit, though, that I'm curious why this seemed like a better idea than the 1/! key for so long. I have to read up on my typewriter history...

Gravatar What Timothy said.
Congratulations on getting a real live manual typewriter!
You will find that doing some typing on a manual will actually improve your computer keyboarding skills, and lessen your chance of RSI or Carpal Tunnel.
My mother worked for the city police for 12 years, transcribing things on computer keyboards. She of course had learned on a manual typewriter (as did I), and never once got RSI though the younger women she worked with (who had learned on computers) were dropping away with hands like claws....
What's your next purchase, a mimeo machine? I'd love to have one of those...
