Yes, we're not doctors, but it's pretty intuitive that anything that exercises your whole hand will be preferable to keeping your wrists immobile and letting your tendons and ligaments do the wiggling.
I have three or four manual portables myself, and a supply of old ribbons, for When The Lights Go Out. I even beat a typewriter to death with my hands when I was in Japan in 1990 - I had no computer but a powerful lust to write letters and tell everyone what was going on. I got a small portable and typed on it until it stopped working.
I think you should design a New Creek wargame!
