Periodically the UK seems to flirt with the totalitarianism that Orwell found frighteningly alive in Britain. For those of us across the pond, it is sad to watch the decline.

In every respect, a turnout of 71% would, on the face of it, seem very good. So why the desperation to force voting? My guess is that it's really the EU parliament elections that are so low as to delegitimize the outcome that really worries Labor.


61% turnout, but hey, I'm not one to split hairs. The real trouble is that only 22% of the electorate voted for New Labour. Somehow, this translated into a seat majority of 66. Yet in England they polled less votes than the Conservatives.

Skewed system... Oh I think so.
