You say this is a significant move--and I see how it is--but beyond that what are the consequences that might flow from this shift?

If the newly named SIIC is succesful in drawing some nationalist support from Sadr, that's good. Repositioning themselves in favor of Sistani also means accepting Sistani's recognition of popular soveriegnty, a developmnt which I think is rather more revolutionary than we in the US seem to grasp.

More nationalistic, more democratic: These are good things, more likely to draw in needed support from Sunni leaders to begin to reach a genuine accomodation.
