Mrs. Blessed,
Thanks for posting this valuable essay. I think the situation Kass describes here, that of sex unbound to its procreative and deeper spiritual meanings, is, in the grand sweep of time, temporary and is a function of these conditions:
“our modern democratic, liberal, enlightened society — celebrating equality, freedom, and universal secularized education, and featuring prosperity, mobility, and astonishing progress in science and technology.”
It amazes me how confident even the most traditionally minded observers are that “our modern” condition describes a permanent reality for humanity. Will these institutions survive depleted resources, a dwindling economic future and the steady erosion of the hegemony of whites (who created these technologies and values)? What about when the non-democratic, non-liberal, non-enlightened barbarians who are clamoring to get inside our empire turn these institutions on us as weapons? It seems to me the future is going to look a lot like the past, if not in our lifetimes, within 50 to 100 years or so. In order to survive, people are going to have to get back to basics. All these “traditional” arrangements, because they are grounded in the truth about human beings, are going to return to the fore.
“…the unsettling implications of American individualism, each person seeking only in himself for the reasons for things.”
A prescription for unhappiness, in my experience.

'In order to survive, people are going to have to get back to basics. All these “traditional” arrangements, because they are grounded in the truth about human beings, are going to return to the fore.'
Absolutely. The white middle class is being squeezed at the margins. The left hand-side of the IQ/time horizon bell curve are misceginating themselves out of the gene pool. Those at the right-hand tail of the IQ/time horizon bell curve are simply failing to reproduce themselves. Those that survive as middle class Whites will be Christian traditionalists with at least a small amount of racial consciousness, by definition. They will have to rely on the tried and true methods of gaining and keeping weath for their children.
For fifty years, the United States has lived on the social capital of WASPS, but that is almost all gone now. Future whites will have to get tough or get used to living in third-world conditions. See, for example, ParaPundit's post "Single Mothers Have Poorer Marriage Prospects" at

Just found your website, and it looks pretty groovy. I'm just wondering, since I'm not acquainted with most of your writing, about the sexuality of a woman who is UNABLE to have a period, not due to birth control. Does barrenness change a woman's sexuality?
And, if an unmarried woman is barren, knowing her sexuality is unlinked to procreation, ought she marry?

Like the person above, I just found this blog...
You know, there's a lot of business about how young people are immature and put off adulthood. But speaking for the Northeastern lower-upper-middle class (I can't speak for anyone else), we can't raise enough capital to buy a home and support a family until our 30s, and our high school and college years involve lots of miserable studying and extracurricular activities. We don't get to be kids when we're actually young, and we can't be adults until middle age, so can you blame us for taking youth when we can get it?

Hi scifigeek and Sue. I am sorry for neglecting you.
Sue, hard cases make bad law. Why create a bunch of legalistic rules to cover every exception when the point is to cover the majority of cases? Just because you can find an exception doesn't mean you have disproven the rule.
scifigeek, you ask a great and very important question. Your culture forces you into adolescence at a very young age and keeps you there into middle age. Doesn't it make you angry that you have been forced to squander your prime years on fruitless hedonism?
I don't think anyone blames you, except for your role in passing this curse onto your children. Your purpose in life is to find a way out of this death trap, and to make sure your children are never snared into it.

Actually, I was too geeky to get much hedonism in, so I'm even more bitter
But you were kind enough to respond, and I wasn't expecting you to, it was more of a rhetorical question, so I will do so as well.
As for me, I'm actually fine with traditional values. Basically, I don't think I can raise healthy kids, so I'll pass that on to the hypothetical missus, who should better at it (genetically and culturally), and work. Hopefully I'd have a girl, who can use her mother as a healthy model.
My kids...that's tough, I could try to bring them up with traditional values but I'm probably not forceful enough to resist the media. The creation of a Christian youth culture is actually one of the best things you guys did, since the last thing any adolescent wants is to be different. So I'd try to go a medium-size city: the small ones aren't too welcoming of outsiders from large Northeastern cities and the large ones are too liberal.
