We think alike [or have the same timetable] as I read that same article in Seed this morning too. Upped my guilt quotient for the day.
Best wishes

Hi, Mrs. Blessed!
Your post on autism reminded of a friend who has two autistic sons, one a high functioning adult with a good career and the other who, well, will never leave home.
She is an artist and her husband is an architect, so the engineer theory doesn't seem to hold up in their case.
I haven't heard of any research on PCOS and autism, but I did read in the last year that the heightened rates of autism viewed over time almost exactly matched the increase in the use of thimerosal, a mercury product, as a preservative in vaccines and the increase in vaccination of children over time.
The article I read said that autism rates were decreasing since manufacturers were producing thimerosal-free vaccines for children.
I wish I could remember the reference for you, but cannot. If you google it, you can probably find it.
God bless,
Laurel

Hi Laurel, and thanks for stopping by! Thimerosal is a suspect by many, especially here on the Internet, but is quite irksome in its refusal to stand up and be properly identified in scientific studies as the culprit. See http://drfleablog.blogspot.com/2...anks-
bobby.html as an example. Correlation does not equal causation and all that...

Hi again, Mrs. Blessed,
Looks like I was suckered in by internet hoopla. *apologizes*
Thanks for the reference to Dr. Flea.
BTW, one of the upsides of autism, at least in high functioning autistic people, is sometimes an enhanced spatial awareness. I only say this based on the experience of my friend and her older son, who is a successful architect like his father. She says that he seems to be able to practically walk through in his mind a projected building's spaces and experience how they really work. She says she has read of other autistic people who have similar unusual gifts along with the disability.
God bless,
Laurel

Laurel, it is great to see you! You might be interested in Dr. Temple Grandin, a person I greatly admire. She is autistic, and has used her unusual view of the world to make kill pens more humane. See http://www.grandin.com/ and http://www.amazon.com/Thinking-P...ie=UTF8&

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

"She is an artist and her husband is an architect, so the engineer theory doesn't seem to hold up in their case."
You never know. Neither is a super-social profession (if they were salesmen and marketers, I'd be more surprised), but they both are heavily visual, and I recall reading some autistic people are very strong visually.
The general assumption seems to be that it's more commonly diagnosed nowadays. I certainly believe this is part of it. However, I would not rule out some environmental toxin.
