Ah, that's the question, isn't it: Where's bin Laden? In his defense (am I really typing this? I guess even the devil must have his advocate), UBL makes tapes only rarely and I don't know that he ever reacts immediately to world events. He didn't even admit to his being behind 9/11 until quite a while later. I think he sees himself in a role of general oversight of the Islamist movement and not a micro-manager. It isn't surprising to me that he hasn't come out on this topic. On the other hand, it won't surprise me if, somewhere along the line, another UBL tape comes out that does mention the cartoons as just one more reason for Muslims to reject the West, its freedoms, which are used to mock the Prophet, and its governmental forms, which reject making religious (Sharia) law the basis for governing, as being detrimental to those who seek to live as Muslims.
You ask where he is on the subject of the cartoons. If he had put out a tape quickly in reaction to the cartoons, would you then consider him to be the defender of Islam? That's a rhetorical question as I get the feeling that no matter what he said on the subject or when he said it, you would still have a stone with his name on it suitable for throwing. Good for you!

UBL could come out, make a tape, reject every single terrorist action for the next 500 years, ask forgiveness from every family he has damaged or destroyed (be it by attack or brainwashing their children into being suicide bombers), donate all his money to my favourite charities and go to jail to await the death penalty and I would still spit on him. I loathe him. Not just for what he has done to Islam itself but for what he has done to so many innocent people.
Bin Laden is exactly the type of person I loathe. An egomaniac with dreams of meglomania. He wants to be God. He wants to be considered the saviour of all that is Muslim but you know what: he is our destroyer.
Bin Laden works for Bush and the Saudis.

The people who see Bin Laden as their Robin Hood are usually the disenfranchised. The rich who like him like him because he is useful. People like him make oil prices go up and military companies make money from him too.
I loathe them both just about equally actually but for different reasons.
