well when I turned 30, what I loved more than anything else... was NOT living with my mother!! haaaa
we see how well that worked out...
we didn't do anything special for my 30th birthday... or for Sam's - his birthday is almost a week before Christmas and mine is a little more than a week after - so we're pretty well tapped out
I wanted to throw Sam a surprise party - but that didn't happen
anyway let's see... if I was you I'd try to keep it as relaxed... and INEXPENSIVE as possible!! actually I think the lolcat thing is a great idea
you could also put out baby pictures of her or do a collage of her life over the last 30 years or play music from the year she was born
you can also get M&M's now in all the colors of the rainbow (except MY favorite of course, which was light brown) with messages printed on them - I think I'm gonna do that for my sister this year
I'll keep thinking...

For our 40th birthdays and 15th anniversary, my wife and I threw ourselves a party at a local restuarant. So it wasn't a surprise.
But my mother-in-law took a nice picture of us and laminated it and made placemats that she put at every seat. Pretty neat idea!
You could even make a collage of pictures.

I agree with the pictures idea. And definitely music that was popular 30 years ago. My 30th was spent in an alcoholic haze, so I don't have much else to contribute here.

Brian - that's a really cute idea... like I totally want to do it just for my own every day place mats haaa
everyone should have a picture of us under their plates!! YEAH!
I was trying to come up with a good (cheap and inexpensive to ship) housewarming gift for Ohio friend... I think I'll do that for them with pics of their kids and stuff
maybe do like a scrapbook page/collage type thing - get copies made and laminate them
yer sooo smart - or your mother in law is anyway

i am turning 30 this year in november and am trying to be in denial about it, lol. i mean 30? my gosh i cannot be 30...i thought that by the time i was 30 i would have at least 2 kids already, not to mention be married and well i'm not any of those things yet so i can't be 30 right? well so much for denial. anyway, i would love to be with close friends and family...something a little out of the ordinary to make it really special, like a fancy restaurant. i liked the idea that someone had about music from 30 years ago, that is a cool idea. i think what i would love is a collage or little book filled with pics of my first 30 years...my mom is really crafty so i can hope and hint a lot, lol. well good luck!!

I love the idea of blowing up the pictures of the cats, that is awesome. I also liked the collage idea. One thing that my family did for me, was to make a book out of all the letters that I had written to them over the years. One of my prized possessions however, is a set of letters that my parents wrote to me, telling me what it was like for them to be my parents.
As far as decorations I would use simple since the wedding is going to elaborate. You can go to the dollar store and pick up a glass bowl and fill it with water and float flowers or candles inside. Candles are another great idea for decorating. If you have time, you can make your own candles and line the inside of the glass container with some of your favorite pictures of her before pouring in the wax, awesome keepsakes. Maybe you could set a tablet and pen next to each person's spot and during the meal they can write down their favorite memories of her, their hopes for her, or if you are looking for funny, have them write a little something about how they'll see Lucy at age 60, or a similar theme, when everyone is done, just slip into a 3 ring binder that says "Lucy's last 30 years" or "Lucy's next 30 years".
As for the theme, think about Lucy in terms of "is she up for funny or not funny, would she see people laughing at her or with her right now" I personally did not want funny, I wanted sentimental.
I had a lot of other ideas, but I couldn't find your email address and didn't want to post a million and one things here. Feel free to email me though and I'll be happy to give more ideas.
But remember Amber, no matter what you do, you are her Mom and the most important thing to her is going to be that you tried, no matter how well or not well you felt it turned out.

We just had my 40th at a restaurant, it too was a surprise. They didn't do much as decorations except one balloon with a 4o on it, tied to a centerpiece with little confetti thingies that said Happy Birthday. Boring I know, but I was surprised so it didn't really matter to me!
Everyone else had much better ideas! Good job guys!
BTW, have you heard of this website?

They are these GREAT books that you can make. Bound and everything, like real books. A friend made one and it's super cool. I'm making one for my daughter for graduation, but I was thinking about how great it would be for a 30th birthday or a...I don't know...a WEDDING maybe?
Well, good luck with the party!
HUGS!

All the ideas streaming in are great. The music idea seems perfect for you to accomplish, Amber. Maybe music of thirty years ago and then a mix of the last thirty years of music.
Of course you can always put a bouquet of 30 roses in light pink (for a girl) on the table, although this might not be cheap.
Dan pulled together the pictures for the video so maybe a collage would be easier now because of all the work he's already done with scanning, etc.
A gift idea might be a 30-year-old bottle of wine. The vintage would be special!
Just some thoughts. I'll keep thinking. I'm traveling for work and enjoying a bit of desert heat but missing my family horribly. ::sniff::

When I turned 30 I was pregnant out to there, so I didn't celebrate at all. No ideas here.
And I say dude all the time. My students laugh at me when I do.
