Without Carter would we have had Ronald Reagan? When the Democrat and Republican nominees position on some very important issues are the same, Does it really matter which party can claim the White House?

Carter famously carried his own luggage too. And look how that turned out!
Donald you been hitting the Straight Talk Kool Aid a bit hard today?
Funny how we couldn't get you on at Mike's America with a personal invitation to defend McCain when he was on the ropes and now you're dancing for joy and only too eager to share it.
One point from your second comment at my page stands out:
McCain" took about a quarter of conservatives, secured nearly a third of evangelicals, dominated among his typical base of self-described moderates, and won easily among voters who care about authenticity, experience and electability."
So McCain won with a small fraction of the base of conservatives who actually do the work, make the phone calls and donate the money. And he's left to depend on the squishy moderates who are notoriously unreliable and unmotivated.
If McCain is the nominee, he cannot win without a majority of conservatives and evangelical republicans. And it's difficult to see how he motivates them while he, and his supporters, continue to ignore them or insult them.
McCain might get their votes when push comes to shove. But he's unlikely to get their loyalty, their money or their passion.

First of all, I do predict that McCain, short of a miracle, will get the nomination. I also predict that Hillary will win if McCain is the GOP nominee.
Sometimes, it is more important to stand on principle than to tow the party line. At least that's what McCain has always done.
Since my principles will not allow me to vote for McCain and his attempts to redefine conservatism, I will have to seek my principles somewhere else whne I vote for President. I hear the Libertarians are recruiting.

Darrell: There're wide differences between McCain and the Democrats.
Conservatives will obviously be noticing them more as things develop.

Couldn't get me to defend McCain, Mike?
You're joking right? I think the point about the "lazy" amnesty slur is sticking in your craw:

I've taken the high ground over here, reporting on the campaign as it progressed.
My guy's one now, no apologies there.
Time to get aboard the Straight Talk, man!

Patrick: 2008 is no slam dunk for the Dems, and as I've repeatedly reported here, McCain leads all the candidates on leadership and electability:

I'm still a Mitt fan, but I'm not crazy enough to say if he isn't the nominee I won't vote. I'll back the party's nominee. But, I'm allowed to hope it is Romney until it becomes obvious it isn't!

That was a good article, Don. I'll get behind McCain if he's the nominee but, until Romney concedes, I'm in Mitt's corner.

I may not like the fact that McCain won Florida, Donald, but I came over to congratulate you anyway. I don't see where being a sore loser is going to get me anywhere whatsoever. Unlike Patrick M., I will vote for McCain if he should win. He may hold some of the same ideas as the Dems do, but I know for sure he'll be stronger on national security than either one of them! I am definitely not planning on cutting off my nose to spite my face, and I wish others wouldn't do that either.

I blogged about the McCain win this morning, and then listened as Glenn Beck AND Laura Ingraham essentially told people to sit at home rather than vote for him. Frankly, I found their position shortsighted, infantile and idiotic.
If they want to GUARANTEE that either Clinton or Obama captures the White House, this is the best way to do it.

A Little Revolution: I'd do the same for Romney, I just don't think he's going to be the one at this point.

Hi Gayle: This is a hard process, nominating the GOP standard-bearer. Last November I was weighing for whom I would vote. I liked all the candidates, except Ron Paul.
Now McCain's looking to lock things up. I'm happy, but now I want us all to pull together. We'll see how Romney does next Tuesday and go from there.
Thanks for visiting.

Just to clarify something: I am not here to say no one should vote for McCain and hand the election to the Dems. I will make it abundantly clear on my blog why I can't vote for McCain specifically. But everyone must decide for themselves what to do.
Oh well, either way, I look forward to 2012, when it will be possible to return the GOP to its conservative base.
Being negative never accomplished anything, except expanding the size of the government. So I will be positive from here on out.

Doesn't anyone check? McCain has a 90% "agreement" rating from the American Conservative Union. He IS a Conservative, the hatchet job on him being done by the likes of Ingraham, Beck, Savage, Limbaugh, Hewitt, etc., notwithstanding. Again, what they are doing is at best counterproductive, and at worst destructive and just plain stupid. The scary thing to me is that if they have their way, and McCain captures the Republican nomination but then goes down to defeat, they will take that as a sign of validation. Not good.
Look, McCain has cast some votes and taken some positions that leave me completely nonplused. BUT.........let's keep the big picture in mind, okay? Given a choice between him and either Hellary or Obama, who would YOU pick? You want to tell me that there's NO difference between McCain and those two? How about on Iraq? How about on the Fairness Doctrine? How about on health care? Do I need to go on? Should I have to?
Sorry for the rant, but God, I'm frustrated right now.........

Patrick M: You havent' been particularly negative. If you don't like McCain, that's fine. It's all of these talk radio people and conservative bloggers, in my opionion, who are kiling the party.
