You totally nailed it on the parents and family thing. I'll admit, I'm only an AI part-timer. I watch the show in the beginning of the season because I am totally and obsesively HORRIFIED at how cluelessly awful nearly all of the contestants are at the start. Some of these people NEED to be told their terrible and any form of encouragement should be on improving their talents in the form of study and schooling, not going to a friggin' audition that will be nationally televised. I used to wonder "don't these people have family and friends, loved ones who will pull them aside and figure out a way to gently break it to them that they suck as an entertainer?" They do. They're waiting in support right outside in the waiting area, all ready to hug poor Johnny Cant-sing, when they should have told him weeks before that he shouldn't even *think* about it. The judges usually got it right. They explain to these people that they're not an awful human being, they probably have other talents that they should be focusing on, but they have no business on "American Idol." Some of them don't even have any business singing drunken karaoke.
