In my area, one of the local morning radio shows has been vehemently attacking Tom Cruise on a daily basis. Most of the DJs' arguments boil down to one primary point: Tom Cruise gets whatever he wants, whenever he wants, no matter the cost to himself or others. I find the whole scene ridiculous and downright saddening, and yet, I tend to find myself agreeing with the morning radio show: If it meant enough to him, he'd find a way to somehow coerce his baby into getting a Catholic baptism. I'm not saying that this is right because I do agree with the article, but I am trying to point out that Tom Cruise tends to be more than a bit aggressive when trying to get something accomplished.
On a complete different note: If Tom Cruise were actually as staunch a defender and evangelist for the Catholic faith like he is for Scientology, can you imagine what it would do for the Church? Let's bring him back, people!

Your post was very interesting. I might add that baptism also serves the primary function of welcoming the child into the Catholic community. Since this child will not be raised in the community, this is the biggest obstacle to having him or her baptized. If the grandparents are worried about the lingering affects of Original Sin (a doctrine which I think is on very shaky ground in the case of infant baptism), they would do well to remember that there are other ways a person can be baptized. The child could be baptized in their love and prayers. They could make the Holy Spirit present through their witness and devotion. And in any case, how could they ever doubt that the Lord would fail to look after one of his precious children simply because he or she was not baptized? Catholic doctrine does not teach us that the unbaptized automatically go to Hell (if this is their fear), nor does this make sense when we consider the incredible power of God's salvific love.

Elle: if by chance you are Catholic, you need to brush up on some basic theology; if by chance you are not Catholic...well, you still need to brush up on some basic theology. Best, edp.
