Thanks for posting this.

She smoked him.

Did you hear the baby crying during Dr. Curran's argument? Still, a good exchange by the two. I always appreciate Dr. Smith's eloquence while speaking on the issue.

Gravatar I was present at that debate. Dr. Curran really tried to weasel out of the fact that most contraceptives were actually abortifaciants. At that point you saw his arguments were not only irrational but did not even follow logic.
Dr. Smith is such a blessing to the pro-life movement. I know it gets the pro-aborts mad to see a woman doing what she does.

Gravatar Everybody can get a free copy of Dr. Smith's CD "Contraception, Why Not?" from here:

Gravatar thanks Jin - I linked to it.

Gravatar I was there as well. Even if I had known Chris at the time, I might not have seen him; there were hundreds of people there. It was the only time I have ever seen "Charlie" although he lives in my neighborhood, quite possibly in my parish.

She smoked him.

Like a cheap cigar, as they say, and as they have said with respect to this particular occasion.

One interesting thing was that the mostly lay audience was mostly hostile to Curran. I did appreciate his bravura -- he was having a very difficult time keeping that strange smile on his face -- if nothing else.

Gravatar I was very pleased at the civil demeanor, intelligence and abundant humor demonstrated by both speakers. When people say they want "discourse" with Catholics, I wish they had something more like this in mind.

"It most rarely occurs with tigers."
HA!

However charming Dr. Curran can be, I could not help but notice his greatest skill seemed to lie in respectfully dodging questions.

I spent five years in Japan where the phrase "it's difficult" actually translates to a negative answer or just no answer at all. It is funny how the same translation applies here. Dr. Curran likes to obfuscate the issue when he really needs to take a stand. Typical relativist.

Not only is this approach disingenuous and intellectually cowardly but it could also be characterized very appropriately by the word "impotent" as well. Dr. Curran's words ended up being all sound and no substance.

Dr. Smith, on the other hand, was a fearless and adept Valkyrie who brooked no bull and took no prisoners.

Gravatar Notice that Dr. Smith says about 48 minutes into it:

"It is permitted to take medication therapeutically, that would be the same medication you might use contraception. It is permitted to use the same chemicals in your body to say, get rid of endometriosis, or if there is a medical indication for, these same chemicals... that you could take those. In that instance, the infertility is the side effect of the act; it's not the intention of the act... Now in this day and age... now that we know that the Pill is an bortifacient, even if you're using [the Pill] for therapeutic purposes, you are not to be engaging in sexual intercourse while you're using the Pill, because it could be aborting any children that you conceive."

And if she's right, at least three Catholic Answers apologists are going to have to retract their stance that such therapeutic methods can be used without the need to abstain from sex.

Gravatar I had the privilege of being in the front row right in front of Janet Smith for this debate. She was my spiritual director at the time (I was a student at the University of Dallas where she taught). She ROCKS! I love the way she presents the issues so clearly. Once, my family was visiting me while I was in college, and we went to one of her talks. My little brother and sister at first hoped there would be a playground or crayons because they expected her talk to be boring (they were around 10 & 12). But once she began, they sat on the floor with their eyes riveted on her. Afterwards they told her they loved her speech.

Gravatar Could you increase the volume on the MP3 files? I have them maxed on my end and it is still too low. I want to link some folks here but not at this low volume.

Thanks for putting the files up!

Gravatar I don't think anyone else has reported that problem... so I don't think it is on my end. apologies...

Gravatar If it's not on your end, no apologies necessary!

Maybe most people use earphones or aren't on a laptop. These files are definitely much lower volume than most. The only other source where I have found this to sometimes be a problem is some of EWTN's archives which are pretty poor quality.

Always better to have too much volume and let the listener adjust down than too little and there's nothing much he can do.

It should be a simple matter to check it out on your end and just pump it up if you can. No harm, no foul.

Thanks.

Gravatar Why is this person still called a father ?!

He believes that the Church has changed her teachings on slavery, usury, and religious freedom, which shows just how much educated and "Catholic" he is.
It's very simple, if the Catholic Church ever changed her teaching on ONE subject, then she is not worthy of belief, because she cannot be the representative of God who cannot lie.

Saying that "commissions" of bishops etc. believe that contraception is acceptable so that means it is, is quite a ridiculous excuse, since none of those are infallible in themselves nor do they represent the Church's teaching authority [Magisterium], which is composed of the bishops in union with the Pope.
Most of those commisions are infested with heresy-bearers such as Mr Curran.

Really, how is he still considered a priest ?

Curran: GO TO CONFESSION.

Gravatar You're website looks very good, it was a pleasure to be on you're. Keep on the good work :-) tabak test und liebe zusammenfassung der mc hammer lyrics can

Gravatar Curran flat out lied in his opening statement about slavery. The Church did NOT first condemn the slave trade in the 19th century. I have some letters of popes dating from the 16th century condemning slavery based on race when the slave trade was beginning. I find it unlikely that someone as educated as Curran could have not found that in his research. He must have consciously lied.

Gravatar Oh, and one more thing. Usury is NOT interest. Usury is a unfairly high interest rate. This was discussed on Catholic Answers one day.

Gravatar Dr Curren kept making half-giggly noises whenever he said anything that was patently untrue-makes me think he knew it wasn't true.
When he refused to answer the question Dr Smith asked about how contraception kills the newly conceived child-he lost.
He then said that because 80% of Catholics think the teaching should be changed it should be-but how many Catholics have been taught the truth about contraception? And as Dr Smith pointed out-how many have even read HV?
