Because I would take better care of it. The copy I printed out from the internet already has highlighting, comments and references scribbled on the side....not to mention the peanut butter and jelly from my 2 years old when he tried to sort the copy for me.

Consider this: A hardback edition is far more likely to be purchased by public libraries, thus making it available to people who never go near a Catholic bookstore. It's all part of the New Evangelization!
