Gravatar "this guy" links to astory about Cardinal Martino but the photo is of the very quiet non-controversial and wholly likable auxilary bishop of NY, Brucato.

Gravatar good catch, thx - fixed.

Gravatar Secretary Rice is somewhat pro-choice, it is true, but only nominally so. She is not a rabid pro-abort, nor is she a pro-choice advocate. Now, we on the pro-life side can permanently write her off and oppose her for such leanings, or we can seek to convert her to our side.

The sad fact is that we pro-lifers are not a majority in this country, or in the world. Luckily, outright pro-aborts are not a majority either. Rather, most people are somewhere in the middle -- either nominally one side or the other, or neutral, or merely pro-status quo, whatever the status quo may be.

If the pro-life cause is to be victorious, we MUST bring over to our side good faith persons of integrity -- people like Ms. Rice. We must carefully and charitably convert people such as her. And we must do so, especially if she is going to be our next president, which, given the 1,400-year war we are engaged in, is also an increasing necessity.

Gravatar This letter is an absolutely gross simplification of the morality of international relations. Yes, as JPII says we should seek the common good of the world. I'm sure Rice would agree with that. The thing is, it is impossible to say for sure what the collective good of humanity is. It is very unclear and open to much debate. The National interest is much clearer and therefore it is a better guide(speaking in real, practical terms not theoretical and moral terms) although the common interest is of course part of national interest.
Its funny how the Pope and the bishops are invoked only when their statements are very vague, complex, not ex cathedra and by no means condemn in absolute terms. How frustrating this is!

Gravatar I wanted to let you know that I love your site.

Gravatar Some people are protesting her for her stance on abortion too. http://www.thepetitionsite.com/t...? ltl=1146686006

Gravatar At last someone at BC has decided to stand up for "Catholic" values (Jesuit?) by opposing Dr. Rice! These courageous students and faculty members are to be congratulated. If only they were courageous enough to sign the letter. Perhaps they were afraid that someone would connect each one of them to pro-choice and pro-homosexual organizations, thereby exposing their abject hypocrisy?

Gravatar Have they accepted other people to come and speak, people who oppose Catholic teachings ?

The fact that they concentrated on the war on Iraq and not abortion shows that they're more interested in politics rather than morality.

Gravatar Super-colossal hypocrits. Since when does Boston College give a fig about being loyal to Catholic teaching. Would the theology department care if it was Al Gore? Please. Makes be want to thow up.

Gravatar "As a Catholic, Jesuit, University, we have . . . "

There's nothing like a comma splice in a "look at us, we're smarter than you" letter. (Sorry, the proofreader in me insists on making pedantic observations.)

And yeah, I agree -- BC is such a champion of Catholic moral principles. If you can't distinguish between the moral reality of the human race's interdepedency (which administration officials actually understand well, at least for Protestants) and the use in this context of "the international community" (which translates roughly to "France and Belgium"), then you aren't bright enough to be anywhere near a university ... not that this stopped any professor. I mean, one would think that the commencement speaker for a Catholic university should be a good, upstanding Catholic -- but if you're going to invite just anyone, Dr. Rice doesn't really seem like a bad pick.

Gravatar The stench of hypocrisy from BC is suffocating. It is this theology department that prides itself on trashing parents asking about how many in their department have the Mandatum from the archbishop they are supposed to have. Suddenly these frauds are Defenders of the Faith. BC may be an institution of higher learning, but someone should tell them that average Catholics are not as stupid as they seem to believe if they think their two-faced prattling wouldn't be noticed off campus.

Gravatar Oh, they fully believe that "average Catholics" are stupid. Theology students here are completely babied and have awful reading comprehension, according to my friends who have taken theology classes.

Gravatar Be careful about the term "pro-choice." Condi has described herself as "mildly," or "reluctantly" pro-choice when faced with questions of a constitutional ban on abortion. (Please, no "talking point" retorts, "That's like being a little bit pregnant.) However, this does not translate to a pro-choice position that one would typically equate with John Kerry or Hillary -- in spite of what Dick Morris might say. In our opinion, she has a very clearly stated pro-life, pro-family position that has a real chance of becoming the law of the land:
1. No late term abortion
2. Parental notification
3. No federal funding
4. A libertarian viewpoint, or limited governmental role
5. "Culture of life" values

What she is talking about could realistically become law and reduce the number of abortions in this country faster than anything else on the horizon.
