Oh merciful Heaven.. the new seminary is part of the Neocatechumenal Way? That's horrible. McCarrick can't leave soon enough for me.
I was a priest of the archdiocese of Seattle when Fr. Wuerl was appointed bishop. Cardinal Ratzinger, as head of the CDF, approved the investigation of Archbishop Hunthausen’s leadership. The delegation was headed by Archbishop (later Cardinal) Hickey of Washington.
I think it’s safe to say that the entire scenario was uncomfortable for all involved. I never heard about any death threats. I know that many priests and laity were suspicious of Rome’s intentions. I had lunch with Bishop Wuerl once, and found him to be pleasant and engaging. One of the topics we discussed was the inadequacy of priestly formation.
