I think it was Goethe who remarked that translations, like women, were EITHER beautiful, OR faithful, but never both. He wasn't exactly fair on women (so let's not pursue this point), and he left out a category of translation which is probably the most common: NEITHER beautiful, NOR faithful. Can you think of any such?
