Gravatar probably a little of both, but knowing our Holy Father, it was probably more out of concern for the crowd.
:o)

Gravatar Chris summed that up nicely. I was going to just answer this way:

Either? Both? Does it matter?

Gravatar I have to agree with Chris as well. Certainly Papa Benedict would take one look at the wilting audience and keep it short. (All the same, anyone who came to see him probably didn't care how hot it was!)

Gravatar Gee ... I remember his FIRST G.A. - they gave him NOTHING .. he was out there in the square on his chair with not even a parasol AND no sunglasses .. at least now they give him a canopy!

Knowing Papa Bear, he probably did it for the crowd .. and yes, I agree ... the crowd probably didn't care that it was so hot, they came to see and hear him ... our Papa is a treasure.
Aloha from Hawaii ...

Gravatar I like we all have the same opinion on that issue.

Certainly, he cares about the health of his dearests. And his dearests admire him so much they don't care about hot weather.

Gravatar soccer mom - I asked the question b/c it seemed more likely to me that Pope Benedict decided to shorten his audience because he was worried about the well-being of his visitors more than himself (and while the title of the article implied the latter, the body of the article supported the former).

Gravatar ... not like this is a HUGE point or anything. ;)

Gravatar Not a problem with us, either ... we just like defending Papa ..

Just the Aloha way ...

Gravatar I fancy, Benedictus felt for the people. As you say he had a parasol.

Gravatar The ANSA report made it sound like Benedict was rushing through to get back to his air-conditioned apartment. I think he was concerned for the crowd. At his Castelgandolfo residence, he put up a canopy for the crowd to shield them from the sun.

Gravatar Of course the Pope´s words express concern for the crowd. But what if Pope Benedict was hot himself? Is that a big deal?

I cannot resist taking advantage of this opportunity to suggest the return of the surrounding the Papal Throne. And of the flabella as well!

Gravatar What I meant to say was:

... the return of the baldachinno surrounding...

Gravatar What air-conditioned apartment?

Gravatar When will people finally realise that there is a practical use for gold-embroidered canopies and ostrich feather fans?

Gravatar Juan,

That's what I was talking about. The canopy is the baldachinno, and the feather fan is the flabella.

Gravatar Okay, but the feathery fans still look like remnents from CLEOPATRA, I keep looking for Tall Nubian Guards to wave them, or Roman Slave Girls to peel grapes; somehow in combination with Papa Benedict it just does not work, (gets the giggles)...
