Those two clips were pretty blatant - not going to lie.
As for backlash, comedians are pretty indestructable, so I think he's put himself in a good position.
If people get upset, others will just say, "what are you worried about - he's a freakin' comedian."

He can get away with a lot as long as it's part of the act, I don't think audience backlash is as much of a factor as his bosses telling him to knock it off.

I can't see why there would be backlash. The staunch conservative Catholic perspective is most definitely "Stephen". The real Stephen is a Liberal and progressive Catholic. The core of Stephen's audience are those who have loved him for years and have known he is Catholic for years. His own faith made his Daily Show segment 'This Week In God' one of the most popular during his time on the show. Only someone with a strong idea of faith could skewer the things people do in the name of religion so well. He doesn't believe he can't disagree with his church and he does, on many issues. You only have to look at the Donohue interview for that. He looked disappointed by Donohue at the end and his parting comments about secular Jews keeping Catholics down said it all. Having said that, Stephen is a brilliant advertisement for Catholicism. For every Catholic who finds it incredibly hard to reconcile their Liberal beliefs with that of their church. Stephen manages to do it admirably and that is why he does not alienate anyone..Except a lot of conservatives, especially in the wake of the WHCD speech...But that's due to his political leanings of course!:)

He unapologetically wore ashes on Ash Wednesday.
The stem-cell dialogue was brilliant, because it made people with knee-jerk liberal leanings at least admit that there is more to the pro-life position than they've been admitting.
If only he would do the same with the knee-jerk liberal stance on homosexuality, rather than having his character be the left's favorite cliche, a homophobic closet case.
I bet he'll be instrumental in the conversion of some people I know. That's enough for me.

These clips are awesome!
Donohue acted a little crazed in that interview, though. He was really hard to stomach. I don't mean his opinions. I mean his delivery. It's like he talks rapid-fire and sounds like he's ranting no matter WHAT the topic is. And he's kind of arrogant. The thing with the ruler was super-aggravating. I think Catholic spokespeople need to really care more about the way they present themselves. You get nowhere with anyone if you are so annoying that people want to run away from you (or attack you with a frying pan) within 5 minutes.
