Prayers for Mel Gibson, and prayers for the cops who save us from ourselves on a daily basis. When we read about or see people getting into trouble, our first thought is usually about the trouble or crime, and not the brave, often risky and often heroic act that took place. Cops never know what they're going to get when they pull someone over.

St. Michael the Archangel is the patron saint of these men and women if you're inclined to direct your prayers towards him.

Gravatar Ditto to Karen's comment. I am distressed about the whole incident and pray that it becomes the turning point for the definitive emergence from addiction for Mr. Gibson. Prayers also for his whole family in this trying time.

Gravatar Addiction has a way of making you feel hopeless. Like God has turned your soul over to be rent asunder by the hounds and all your prayers for intercession are just disappearing into a darkness.

Better that these feelings of despair lead to anger towards God rather than a running away from Him. At least if you are angry you are still talking to Him.

To have the knowledge that predilection to give yourself over to Satan is somehow ingrained into your very body through corporal association that comes with addiction is the most vile torture.

You are capable of doing good all over the place but in the one place where it matters most, where your own willpower would keep you out of mortal sin and away from the threat of eternal punishment, you are powerless.

The game of Russian roulette with your soul (where the stakes are eternal and thus higher than any game on Earth) continues the daily torment.

You want it to end, but you do not have the power. You cry out for help but it never comes. So the insanity sets in and you let the madness take full control. "If He does not care about me, then why the Hell should I?"

The whole time Satan has been right by you, watching and waiting like an expectant father for your fall. As you turn to him desperation, he envelopes you in his vampiric embrace.

Hello darkness my old friend...

(Do not expect the Secularites to understand as this world is beyond the of their comprehension)

Gravatar I must say I was shocked and saddened to learn about Gibson's episode, whatever the source. I always worry that the media will jump on anything he says (whether sober or otherwise) because he's a very "out" Catholic, which of course is deeply unfashionable anywhere, especially in Hollywood. And I must admit that I do worry at times that he may be harbouring anti-Semitism that he mostly has the sense to keep to himself, but that may emerge when he's vulnerable (for instance, intoxicated). I'm thinking of the sentiments expressed by his father, who seems to be a bit of a nut. But anyway, perhaps the law-enforcement people who got involved here have more sense and sensitivity (as they should have) than reporters. We must all just pray for the best for him.
