Huh? "Safe distance protocols" dictated by a Pastoral Constitution? And where is Paragraph 94? GS has 93 and a whole lotta footnotes.
And what is that inscription on the floor? My first guess was "LIFE SAVERS," but it would've been in Latin.

It's probably a good idea in any case to leave a "neutral ground" between the Pope and his audience. These days there's no shame in being careful.
It also lets everyone get a better look at Papa Benedict!

I have a hard time with the Pope's approach to this conflict. In particluar, his reference to WW2. That conflict was a perfect example of when war is necessary, and the Allied victory was a better outcome than a potential Axis victory. Of course, unified peace is best. But, we don't have any good reason to believe that Nazi Germany, for example, would have ceased its agressions. Similarly, the status quo between Lebannon and Israel is hardly a union of peace.

"In particluar, his reference to WW2"
Well, as a participant in WW2, Pope Benedict probably would have a different perspective than most of us would. I met folks in Sardinia in the 70s who regretted the demise of El Duce (Benito Mussolini). There's just no accounting for taste.

Man, if I had my photoshop pen with me right now, I'd put one of those big holographic globes from Star Wars in the middle of that room.

I think it was in Werte in Zeiten des Umbruchs (published in April 2005) that I read a couple of sermons preached by Cardinal Ratzinger (as he then was) at VE celebrations (one of them beside German war graves). It left me in no doubt (not that I was in any before) that he regarded the allied victory as a blessing. He would have seen, and experienced, at first hand the post-war misery. After WWII, all the nations in Europe were worse off than they had been before it started. It took a terrible toll on Britain, for example. But all that aside, I wouldn't rush to judge HH on a wee snippet of his interview.

P. Eberhard v.Gemmingen, leader of the german section of Vatican Radio hat the persanal impression thar the interview was quiet painfull for the Holy Father for he closed it by saying. finally-it's finished! I also think, that for Pope Benedictit was a real üpersonal mortification to give this interview. He began by saying I'm sitting here like in front of a tribunal, and I guess that wasn't only a joke.....
