HA!
Actually, it looks like Papa made a walkabout on the set of _Memoirs of a Geisha_ or something . . . .

"Pope Benedict had the pleasure of receiving Queen Amidala today at the Vatican. Though not a Catholic Queen, Her Majesty refrained from the traditional black when meeting the Pontiff, apparently under the impression that she is Mrs. Tony Blair."

Even Pope Benedict XVI had to undergo the dreaded 'pheromone detection' by the Moth People.

"Ah, I see a long life and a most blessed one." Ordinarily, don't fortunetellers read the palm of the hand?

Why are you joking about other cultures and their choice of dress? These woman look very beautiful and are treating His Holiness with the utmost respect. What's so funny about it? You should try to get out and see the world more. You complain that the West lacks tradition, but when another culture shows their traditions, you have nothing but jokes. Not a single one of you have a nice thing to say about this beautiful photograph. Really you should be ashamed.

caption tells us that they are Chinese dancers of the Lan Yang Catholic Youth Center, but no word on where they are from... i wonder if they performed for the Holy Father or were just in the audience. While the dress and hair arrangement might have been appropriate during the Tang dynasty, it's not really 'traditional' e.g. what one might expect for some formal occasions. One only sees that kind of dress, etc. in movies, TV, or in dance troupes.

Chan, nobody suggested they go to the grocery store dressed like this. Obviously they are dressed like that for some kind of performance. And yes, it is TRADITIONAL dress. It doesn't really matter what era it's from. My point was that they look beautiful and yet all the commentors of this post have to offer is mockery and jokes.

Anonymous, we're using traditional with different senses then. The qipao is traditional and still in use, along with "traditional" Chinese wedding garments.
I think your point was obvious--I was clarifying for those who were not familiar with what was being worn.

Andrew, a kind of joke that alternately refers to Chinese women in traditional dress as: fortune tellers, Japanese geishas, a movie character from Star Wars, and "Moth People" (probably the worst insult of all of them)? No, I can't take that kind of joke. Especially when said Chinese women in traditional dress are fellow Catholics who are honoring the Holy Father. And still, NOTHING NICE TO SAY ABOUT THE PHOTO from any of you. Just a sarcastic attack on the one who pointed out how rude you all are.

Anonymous, it is a lovely picture, both of the Chinese dancers and of Papa Benedict. The humor for me and the others lies in their postures--what is the Chinese lady doing looking at the Pope's hand? (Kissing his ring presumably, but it still looks odd.) No, I doubt she goes to the grocery store dressed that way. Aren't there fortune tellers in China, and don't they look nice too? It's just a light-hearted moment in a pleasant meeting.

You are an extremely childish person, Panda Rose. "What is she doing looking at his hand?" She's kissing his ring!!!!!!!!!! I still don't get what you find so amusing. Fortune tellers in China?? Are you daft? This woman is clearly not a fortune teller so why do you INSIST on this insult? You should stop, because you're going from bad to worse.

Oh please, Miss B. I KNOW she's kissing his ring, but she's looking so intently at his hand that it does resemble palm-reading. China does too have fortune tellers and diviners, I'm thinking of I-ching or Feng Shui type stuff; and I do admit we Westerners don't always understand. Papa is smiling, he doesn't seem to mind what's going on.
If I offend, I apologize. I wanted to keep the comment light.

I think the girls are beautiful. The young woman is bending over to kiss the Pope's ring (that is why her eyes are cast downward) and he is obviously delighted. Great picture (and the one with the two step up ahead- I liked that one too.)

Well I didn't say anything insulting if I recall. Papist-pics-of-the-day almost always poke fun at certain things, including the Pope!
I'm sorry if people made fun of the headresses of those Chinese women anon. Maybe you should have Thomas address the issue..
