Ever notice this almost aura-like peace people have, who do not take themselves seriously? Papa's right here. Something to keep in mind when things seem too much.

Yes, he's very serene and self-possessed. And he's never hurried, takes his time with things. That's real peace.

I think the truth is that people did not see this side of him simply because they did not wish to see it. They had a comfortable pre-fab view of him as a crotchety, stuffy old throwback conservative that fit their mindset and therein their agenda to a T. Those same people must be absolutely falling over themselves trying to figure out what this Pope is going to do next. Maybe an encyclical on Christian Happiness is just what's in order. Dentists the world over would make a fortune on fixing all the teeth damaged by the jaw dropping if that happened.

No, no, no, no--we don't _do_ the humourlessness thing. We know our strengths, and recognise others'; that's why we leave life without humour to the fundamentalists! :-D

Jaw dropping doesn't harm teeth. Gnashing does.

Papa is truly blessed, having a sense of humor after all this hurly-burly. It definitely must help on the job. He gets this impish grin sometimes; you just know he's thinking, Now what will they be fusiing over today.
No doubt Papa Benedict has heard the quip that angels fly because they take themselves lightly...

Quoting Chesterton - good on him. Chesterton will definitely help keep you sane.
