I forgot where I read it but it seems that Bishop Carlson was in Rome recently(not on business)when He received a summons to meet privately with the Pope.I believe that a bishop if he is in rome for whatever purpose out of courtesy informs the Holy Father.

I lived in South Dakota until just recently and when he was first installed there were murmurs then that Bishop Carlson would not be long in the diocese. When he started battling prostate cancer things were put on hold, but it looks like his health has improved. My guess is that he would make the move to be Harry Flynn's co-adjudicator in Minneapolis. Carlson has roots in that community and started as an auxillary under the late Archbishop Roach.
My mother and grandmother are still waiting for a bishop of their own in SD. I am hoping for a couple of local priests to get the call, but I think it will be an auxillary from somewhere.

Perhaps I did read it here. I'm originally from Detroit and later the Saginaw Diocese before I left for Washington. He has breathed life into a dead diocese;they need him in Detroit where there have been orthodox bishops (after Dearden) but who lack the evangelical zeal Carlson has. But if that is the case I hope Rome appoints him an auxiliary he could train before he would leave.

Interesting note about the first permanent deacon in 25 years. I thought the permanent diaconate was a rather common practice nowadays. Our diocese has at least a few ordained every year.
