To bolster Ed's point, here's an item from the Cafeteria is Closed where Archbishop Dolan takes Daniel Maguire to the woodshed.
Hmmm, what's that sharp, bony thing I see? Is that a spine? Methinks it is.

Once a few bishops try and find they survived the bad press they get, and that they didn't cause a schism, they'll try it again. This time on the guys who went to the press about the last time.
Soon the bishop's antics will be old news and he can operate without fear. Plus the goofballs in the diocese will begin to come in line.
And more bishops will do the same. But I'm not holding my breath. Vertebrates take a long time to evolve from lower forms of life.

What always irks me is that when talking about married priests, people never seem to remember that all priests are already married: they are married to the Church.

Besides, Roman, we Catholics *do* have married priests -- in the Eastern rites - but the married ones can't become bishops! However, you're correct, in the West we have developed the idea of being "married" to the Church.
Are spines growing? God grant that it is so! We'll see . . . and continue praying.

Among the Eastern rites, from what I understand, the notion of sacerdotal marriage to the (local) Church is associated with being a bishop, which is why they make bishops only of celibate priests.
