"And this is the writing that was inscribed: MENE, MENE, TEKEL, and PARSIN."
Wonder if Colbert's middle name is Daniel?
Surreal.

Okay, Mr. Colbert is Catholic, but is being Catholic also a part of his act? It comes across as a big joke, always.

He is a professional comedian ...everything is a part of his act. Is it his persona? Sure. But who is to say that it isn't his way of getting to speak the Truth and have people listen?

Colbert teaches sunday school, attends Mass with his whole family (3 or 4 kids?), and is married to his original wife of 15-20+ years. Sounds like a fairly practicing fellow to me.

Sam Kinison, a former preacher, brought religious elements into his act, but he did have very heartfelt religious beliefs as well, the beliefs and the act. Thus, it is hard to separate them out. Comedians just try to be funny and are willing to put their own beliefs up for satire, the price of comedy.

I love the guy - I think his sarcasm and wit reach a lot of people and actually get them to think. This was great.

It's a mystery.
I think you can tell that he is actually more rather than less conservative because he tells jokes that conservatives get. For the most part, I really don't think that liberals could convince anyone that they were actually conservative enough to make them laugh.
His religion works the same way. From what I've seen of him, he seems to make fun of controversial religious topics from a prespective that nominal Catholics wouldn't get.
No matter how you cut it, he is more funny than at first glance. Because, he has convinced most conservatives that he is conservative, and I think most liberals think it is an act. So, he's fooling one party, no matter what. Comedic genius.
I'm glad to read the comment about his teaching Sunday school and attending mass. Where did you hear that?

People don't remember that satire is of course meant to convey some kind of truth. It's funny, but on a deeper level there is a truth that an author, comedian, etc. wants to show his audience.

Hi Eric, somewhere on Youtube there is/was a Colbert video with Conan O'Brien. I think it was labeled with tags like Colbert, and liturgical dance (because he did a liturgical dance and that was the point of the video). It's not a serious liturgical dance, btw; he's just being funny. But in the same interview video, he also said that he teaches Sunday school. And that the dance is a great way to get the attention of six-year-olds.

I guess my point is, it certainly sounds like he's a practicing Catholic however, I'm still not certain who the joke is on. I laughed at the clip. I always laugh at his clips, he's very funny. But why were all the "godless sodomites" laughing?

Lynne:
Because they weren't sure what to do. It seemed to me there was this . . . pause, after Colbert's comment, while they tried to decide. When John Stewart played his part, I think they decided -- "oh, it's a joke, we can laugh."
Colbert may be mocking us, but the fact is, what he said to them -- "godless Sodomites!" and "bow to your god!" (the Emmy) were 100% true!

You could see precisely that pause in the cuts to the audience. The ridiculously blank look of Debra Messing (of the late sodomite-celebrating show Will & Grace) demonstrated this admirably. They weren't sure whether they were laughing at Colbert, his beliefs (feigned or real) or themselves. Well done, Stephen!

Sam Kinison isn't really the best example. He was purely disgusting. There was nothing religious about his "act". It's true he had been a preacher and he openly admitted he struggled a great deal with putting what he believed into action. But as the years went by he was acting out more and more and more like a pagan. The drinking, bragging about sex with prostitutes, the drugs, the extremely foul language. Sorry, he was NOT "putting religion into his act". He was a pig. At least publicly he was. Maybe he was different in private.
