First vote! And I happen to think Pitt will be filled quickly. Too major an area to let slide.

At an ordination several years ago an elderly cantankerous priest said to me,"They are always griping about a priest shortage, you never hear them complain about a bishop shortage". That is until now.

You might consider adding the various dioceses where the current ordinary has reached retirement age, namely:
Detroit (a): Cardinal Maida, 18 Mar 2005
Davenport: Bishop Franklin, 3 May 2005
Springfield-Cape Girardeau: Bishop Leibrecht, 30 Aug 2005
Monterey (Cali.): Bishop Ryan, 3 Sep 2005
Lansing: Bishop Mengeling, 22 Oct 2005
Superior: Bishop Fliss, 25 Oct 2005
Baltimore (a): Cardinal Keeler, 4 Mar 2006
Louisville (a): Archbishop Kelly, 14 Jul 2006
Dallas: Bishop Grahmann, 15 Jul 2006

"What U.S. diocese most urgently needs to be filled?"
Los Angeles.

John V stole my thunder, I was also going to suggest Los Angeles.
Cardinal Mahoney would be so much better if he cared about the unborn as much as he does about immigration.

Well, personally, Dallas since that is a bit more "close to home."
However, I would certainly think that Los Angeles, Rochester, and Orange County are in some serious need a (real) bishop

Albany, NY. But I would agree that LA is more important.

Living in the Diocese that I do, my vote goes to the Monterey Diocese and Bishop Ryan. He has been here as of today for a year and 3 days since his 75th birthday, and in the Diocese for 14 years too long. We need a real man here, a real Bishop who will lead his flock, not appoint sodomites to pastorships, stand up to pro-abortion "catholic" politicians, and teach authentic Catholic doctrine, and not support a tax measure to support a hospital where abortions are performed. http://www.seattlecatholic.com/

Oh, and an indult to have the Traditional Latin or Tridentine Mass would be just peachy!
Am I asking too much?

Diocese of Great Falls-Billings. The priests here need a little bit of smacking around.

un Mexico,
Monterey is my home diocese. I have met and know Bp. Ryan for at least 10 years. He is a fair man and a decent scholar. However, I have been upset that he has not allowed any indult masses. I attended a couple of the diocesan "Liturgy Gatherings" and Chrism Masses. The liturgies are not exactly the most dignified.
The other thing that has always made me nervous: before ordination as a Bp., he was rector of St. John's Seminary (serves LA archdiocese and suffragens). During his tenure, the most priests ordained was 4 in a couple of years ago. Now we have 4-5 seminarians.
On a personal note, I will be sad to see Bp. Ryan leave. However, I pray for a stronger man to succeed him.

Well my diocese has been vacant the longest. I think it's time. By the way, the patron of the Diocese of Lake Charles is St. Peter Claver, who's feast day is coming up (Saturday).

Andrew,
Yes! Lake Charles needs a bishop...it's been a year and half now.
I'm from Pittsburgh, but at least the Auxiliary Bishop, Paul Bradley, is there to cover things until a new Bishop is selected.

Where are your heads, folks? The answer is Birmingham.
If the "reform of the reform" is to be effected, imagine the force of an all-Latin Novus Ordo, with knees and tongue reception, beamed around the world?
It's not happening until Foley is out of there.

Michael are you from Lake Charles, or around that area? If so, I didn't know any locals had a Catholic blog.
You know what?? EVERY diocese needs a Bishop!!!

Birmingham, Alabama gets my vote for "most urgent" - with EWTN in the backyard, the bishop of that see will potentially have greater influence on the Church in this country than most others. Will the next bishop continue the combative approach towards Mother Angelica's operation? Will he permit them to broadcast Mass at the new shrine, even though it's offered ad orientem?
I think the Vatican knows the import of this appointment. I would not be at all surprised to see an American priest, currently working in the Vatican, get tapped for this spot.

Ha ha, everyone loves Roger. 'Twas my thought as well, and knowing this bunch, I'm not surprised that L.A. came up. Why not San Francisco as well? It will take a generation, or so, before we have a shot at having a more orthodox heirarchy. 72 comes quick, and there are more eager hands waiting to grasp the crook, if only for the sake of the sheep.

South Dakota needs a bishop most desperately. They are fighting Planned Parenthood, NARAL and NOW in their referendum for keep South Dakota abortion free ... and they're losing. Surprisingly not very badly but this is too important an issue to pass by. I pray that they receive a bishop first and the best one the Vatican can offer.
