This certainly does put me in mind of cowboy hats. Perhaps a papal version of _The Magnificent Seven_ (you know, _Seven Samurai_ with, well, cowboy hats) is on the horizon? :-D

P.S. I always think of the camauro as the Papa's Santa hat. YOu know, when he's literally Father Christmas. And I'm probably about the millionth person to say that, right?

Down in TX we call "cowboy hats" 'helmies'.

I've been wondering when he will finally or will ever don the traditional saturno. This day is it! Thank you Papa for the pleasant surprise.

well, as to the turning up the brim, check out those photos.
Pius IX had the brim turned up...the future Pius X had quite a turn and a horse!!
and Cardinal Newman had a whole other thing going on with his hat.

Madame Sosostris, that should be "The Magnificent XVI."

Benedict is certainly looking good in the red, maybe he's really starting a trend.
As for the Magnificent VII, who would the other six be? No doubt John Paul II would be riding right alongside, but who else? hee hhe

Well, hang me for a sheepstealing son of a tarantula, "Ride 'em, Cowboy!" . . . Oh, excuse me . . .
"Ride that Popemobile, Papa!"
with the Bonanza theme playing in the background.

Actually, I'm fairly certain that I have seen photos of either Pius IX or XI and Leo XII with the "cowboy" style saturno.

Benedict XV has the "cowboy" style too, I think. Also Pius XI.

The corks-on-strings things now, of course, makes me think of Papa Benny singing "The Philosophers' Song" . . . .
Father Stephanos: GOOD one! :-D

Oh I would love to see that too!
Thomas you made my day. The only other thing I had hoped for was that there was an announcement that the pope was going to visit Texas and was already getting his vestments ready. LOL.
I love the vestments the pope is pulling out of the mothballs. This is authentic renewal!

I think I like Pope John Paul's old white beanie better. Red is just not Pope Benedict's colour.

Pope Benedict uses the white "beanie" (and I'm sure it's on underneath the red hat). However, the beanie doesn't do much to block the sun.
