That's just not right. Womanhood is clearly not appreciated in their society. Sounds like they basically own their wives. I would never mistreat a woman (she could be a future spouse...).
Contrast that to the West, where being courteous is seen as sexist in some places. For some people on the extreme, a man shouldn't hold the door open for a woman because that's seen as destroying the equality between men and women. Crazy.

That's fine. Just one more way Islamists continue to show themselves for the asses they are. I'm all for it.

Miss B's right again. Another victory for the religion of peace.

Their society is, by their own definition, Islamic. How is any of this 'a message from God'?
Andrew, I hold doors open for men, too. :)

Oh my, what are the liberal journalists going to do!?!? It is so politically correct to not say anything negative about any Muslims, but now they appear to be doing an injustice to women. Oh the quandry!

Kevin and Andrew, you may both hold the doors open for me anytime. I'm going to go out on a limb and say that this goes for Miss B., too, who will doubtless be with me when you see me--we will have returned from lunch and a discussion of the role of women in the West and East! :-D
The infantilisation of women in Saudi Arabia is truly distressing. There are so many bright and capable women there; if they are lucky enough to be in a family that encourages education and work, they'll be able to do well--but only within the structure described in this article. Their entire lives will be severely circumscribed, always, everywhere.
Don't kid yourselves--there are American fundamentalist Christians who are not at ALL far from this position themselves.
Sigh. Where is the sensible middle-ground on anything these days?

I seem to remember that the 'liberal media' also was very quiet about the Taliban, buying the "it's just their culture" line until 9/11 and its aftermath forced the issue.
If a Saudi woman tried to follow in the footsteps of Rosa Parks? The words "fatwa" and "stoning" leap to mind...

Remember, Americans backed the Taliban against the Soviets at one time, so they were the "good guys" then--that's one reason why the media was so quiet.

If people are willing to blow themselves up for Jihad, aren't there a few women ready to sacrifice their lives for women's rights?

Apparently, even in the USA there are some mosques which make women pray in a seperate, less well-appointed room, or worse, ask them to stay home to make more room for the men (there was a link to the blog of an American Moslem woman from the Holy Whapping a month or so ago). So, in view of that, this doesn't surprise me.
It's horrible, though, and I wonder if this will have any effect on conversions or on those women who are capable of escaping their situation. This behavior definitely seems to send a message that women are not welcome in that religion. Thank God I will never be turned away from the door of my church just because I'm a woman.

As a woman I am grateful to God for the esteemed position that He gave to His Blessed Mother Mary in His Church!
