Have you read Freakonomics? There's a chapter on crime statistics and abortion that really got me thinking. The premise is abortion was legalized and years later there's fewer impoverished youngsters to drive up the crime rate. Now here was something that was hard to dispute. A lower crime rate is a good thing. Fewer single moms to struggle day in and day out is good. But at what cost? I needed the words for the way I felt about it and it's right there in Sister Anne's renouncement: "...evil means to achieve a good end." As good as the results may be, the evil nullifies all benefit. "What good will it be for a man if he gains the whole world, yet forfeits his soul?" Matthew 16:26a
Exactly, Michael. Or at least, a very good start to seeing the issue with the mind of the Church (and of our Lord).
