So, presciding from whether the death penalty is ever licit, was there credible evidence that these three men instigated rioting that resulted in human deaths? I can't find a straight answer.

From what I've read it is clear that the trial itself was a sham, that no muslim has been tried for any of the riots, and that the whole thing was conducted secretly and against the expressed multiple pleas of the Holy Father...
