. . . and disheartening. Oh, if women just wouldn't, you know, _live_ out there in the world, well, they wouldn't be raped, eh?

Now, I think I can say with some security (at least I hope I can) that Christians around the world _won't_ react to this vulgar and ignorant statement by bombing a few mosques. Can you imagine if a Christian had made some parallel statement affecting Islamic men?

Outrageous is right. It's encouraging that his remarks were denounced by a large number of Australian Muslims. By all means, he should be deported or tried for inciting rape. I wish Muslims would understand that we know so little of their faith that an immediate response from moderate clerics would be very helpful in understanding these incidents. For all I know, this man is to Australian Muslims what Pat Robertson is to American Christians.

Gravatar Now, now, folks. Why, where is your cultural sensitivity.
BTW, the Frogs have been grapling with this little problem of gang rapes by mostly young Muslim males. I say "males" because a "human," checks his passions and keeps away from that which will lead him to rob the dignity of another.

Charles Martel must be spinning in his grave!!

Gravatar In latest news, it appears the Sheikh won't be preaching for the next 2 or 3 months. Don't know what he'll be doing. Learning about mainstream Australian law and culture? Probably not. Learning English? He's only had 25 years in which to do that, so probably not. Some senior Muslims are pretty appalled. Others say he's been misunderstood. (Sorry, but my Arabic's non-existent.)

I once remember a Turkish waiter explaining to me that when you are cooking, if people come to visit who will not be staying for dinner, it is rude to leave the lid off the cooking pot. Ergo, women must wear tents, or else. It would appear that images like this are alive in certain communities.

Meanwhile, I'm an old fogey, all in favour of modest dress, and silently appalled at what some young women feel obliged to wear (or, perhaps, not to wear) to be fashionable. But there are standards of modest dress that don't include the hijab, and standards of virtuous behaviour that don't include staying at home in your room unless your husband, father or brother is there to escort you, and if you can't cope with living in a country which has those latter standards, there are other places where you can go.

Gravatar What is equally interesting to the fact that he compared women to meat is that he compared men to cats....?

He must really think that muslims aren't real people who have the ability to practice self control and don't need a defence mechanism for every little thing in their lives.

How we understand ourselves as persons have far reaching consequences...

Gravatar Do you mean to say that there are moderate Islamic clerics? I can't see any.
