Yeah, saw this headline, and I actually thought it means that De Vos is doing better. There is no bind for Catholics here, imho. Granholm cannot be voted for; De Vos need not, but he is eligible for the vote of the conscientious.

Gravatar I want to commend you, American Papist, for not shying away from the more political issues and following the example of GK Chesterton who believed there really was nothing more important than God and politics (two of the most unpopular topics of this day and his).

Gravatar Thom & Ed,

In case you need another reason to vote for the guy:

Besides having an anti-abortion stance, Dick DeVos is a strong supporter of the Acton Institute in Grand Rapids. His wife, Betsey, is a member of the Board for the Acton Institute.

For those not familiar with the Acton Institute, it is devoted to bringing Christian values to business and government fora: http://www.acton.org/

The west coast of Michigan has long been a stonghold for Dutch Reformed Christians who have managed to maintain their conservative religious values despite having to fight the liberals in the I-69 highway arc around Detroit & Lansing. Dick DeVos is a product of Dutch Reformed upbringing. I just wish the Good Doctor & I were back up in Michigan to add in our votes.

Best wishes to you both, your Mom (Wife) and all the little Peterses.

Gravatar My uber-liberal pastor told us in the Sunday bulletin to form our consciences for voting by reading "Voting Guide for the Common Good" which I seem to recall is a DNC inspired group working hard to remove the abortion albatross from the Democrat Party. I wrote him back and suggested he could have just as easily referred the parishioners to the Archdiocesan statement and the Vatican's "Catholics in Public Life" pronouncement to give them "choice." I'll never hear back. He's also a liturgical dissenter. The two strains seem to go hand in hand. Tom

Gravatar Yes, my mother sent me that "Voting Guide for the Common Good" touting it as a voter guide for Christians. I've not yet looked at it, though I promised I will do so before the election; if she sent it to me, I know the essence of what it says.

Tom, you don't go to St. Leo's, do you? ;-)

Gravatar I didn't know about DeVos' connection to the Acton Institute. That gives me an additional reason to vote for him. I already have plenty of reasons to vote against Granholm.
