Gravatar "'Clerics are forbidden to assume public offices which entail a participation in the exercise of civil power.' The legislative history of this norm makes obvious the Legislator's intent to eliminiate any exceptions to this rule."

(Permanent) deacons are a possible exception, with their ordinary's consent, IIRC. They are clerics.

Gravatar The positive is he won't be inflicting himself on parishoners!! I'm sure his sermons are ghastly. He should be defrocked!

Gravatar sjt: my whole post is about a priest. deacons come under c. 288, which was not at issue. there is no exception for priests under any of the norms.

Gravatar Dr. Peters, is it that they have this quite wrong, then?

"As with most modern Vatican decrees, however, the final decision is left to the local bishop who may grant permission if he thinks there is serious necessity for the “protection of the rights of the Church or the promotion of the common good.”"

Not that I can imagine such an exception would apply in a case like this anyway. This man is hardly necessary for anything at all.

Gravatar yes, MS, it is just plain ole wrong several ways. check the post. it's all there. best, edp.
