I am so sick of this "priestly celibacy has only been around for a thousand years" bu!!$#!t.
Shouldn't journalists have at least the equivalent of a high school level of education in history before they go off and write their articles?
To insinuate that priestly celibacy is some arbitrary construct with no real basis in the early Church (and Scripture) is at best ignorance, and at worst malicious deceit.

Thanks for writing about this, Thomas. I am so sick of ABC and all the rest of the biased secular media it makes me want to hurl.

don't sweat the MSM--they're simply pawns in a satanic plot to discredit the church and confuse the faithful

I like your reaction, and I think you're right. The media will never get the right idea, because it's not sensationalist.

I recall a howler I read in The Chicago Tribune some years ago. There was a piece on Benito Mussilini in their "Perpsective Section" of the Sunday paper. I almost dropped my coffee cup when I read that Mussilini was a "devout Catholic." I guess the pup reporter didn't do any research because he would have learned that Benito was an atheist who hated the Church so instead he relied on his "intuitive powers" that probably went along these lines: Mussilini is Italian, most Italians are Catholic, and then applied that standard hack phrase used by the media "devout." I never seen a newsman write that a Methodist or Lutheran was devout. Sheesh. Tom

What? Peter was Married? My goodness! How will the Church ever survive that revelation? Why is it that every reporter who writes concerning things Catholic is either named Jim Moron or Joe Obvious?
Christian Cochini's book THE APOSTOLIC ORIGINS OF PRIESTLY CELIBACY is must reading on this subject. It's a dry and acadmeic but highly informative study of celibacy from the apostolic age to the sixth century.

Bill Donohue at the Catholic League has a more inclusive survey than this quite exclusive one from GMA.

What does the secular media KNOW about the teachings of the Church? They know ZIPPO!
Our Lord Himself was A SINGLE MAN-and priests should be IMITATING HIM! Didn't He say, "If a man loves father or mother, WIFE OR CHILDREN, more than Me, he is not worthy of Me"? How clear can that be? [if the quote is not accurate, can someone correct me?]
Yes, St. Peter was married at one time-he's the only apostle who is known to have had a wife. But we don't know about the other apostles if they were married. Think-do these media idiots believe that the apostles would have taken the wives and kiddies with them on their missionary tours....which were DANGEROUS? Of course not!
The priesthood is a vocation of SACRIFICE!
