Gravatar I wonder if liberal Catholics (those who nary ever put a penny in the collection basket) will suddenly spring for the CHD collection this year?

Gravatar FWIW, not all dioceses follow the assigned national collection dates. In Pittsburgh, we're doing the annual collection for the Retirement Fund for Religious on November 23rd. I think the CCHD collection was done earlier in the year in combination with some other special collections, but I can't remember for sure.

Gravatar Here's the dirty little secret about modern life. Every single organization, from Girl Scout troop to multinational corporation, must undergo serious soul-searching and re-examing. To figure out what it is and wants to be. Ignoring the past- just yellow press clippings. Or. It. Will. Go. Poof. Same with the U.S. Church. First to go on the Exit Agenda- this ongoing scam. If not, the folks in the pews will vote with their envelopes. When the financial crisis comes, it will be too late for soul-searching. As in the Big 3 Welfare Cli- uh, Automakers.

Gravatar The local diocese gets to keep 25 percent of what is collected, so bishops have a conflict of interest here.

I wrote Bishop Loverde of Arlington, and asked him to suspend the collection this year. Got a letter back which said they were investigating.

Don't give to this horrible second collection.

Gravatar I am proud to say that I have been calling for a boycott of CCHD since early October.

Either it needs to be shut down or reformed.

Gravatar I will be making a donation to another organization in lieu of CCHD.

Gravatar CCHD is a fine organization as the Bishops Conference affirmed this past week.

My goodness... I'm becoming so exasperated by the Republican/Democratic divide creeping into the Catholic faithful. ACORN posed itself as a well intentioned group, CCHD got duped, and now CCHD has apologized and ended their relationship with ACORN. And since when is trying to alleviate poverty a radical 60's agenda?

Gravatar Adam, you are either on the CCHD payroll or remarkably-naive. Here's a list of grantee organizations, fyi:

May God have mercy on your brain.

Gravatar We have been boycotting the CHD collection for 20+ years! A friend 20 years ago told us that it only funds non-Catholic organizations. he was also incensed about their specific funding of ACORN, a Marxist front group. He confronted the Bishop who just put him off, as they are wont to do when they refuse to take action. The same Bishop was outed a little later.
Why would non-Catholic groups be better at helping to alleviate poverty? No fullness of truth, no graces of the sacraments-what were the bishops thinking 30 years ago? Obviously, having the grace of God is going to make efforts to alleviate poverty more effective.

Gravatar Watch World Over Live at 8:00pm EST tonight. I believe this will be a primary topic along with the USCCB General Assembly.

One point that came clear to me when I watched the recording of this ACORN discussion was that the bishops want a study done to understand what activities it is funding. The forensic accountant is only looking at the money trail. This won't reveal whether monies went to organizations that provided condoms and contraception, for example.

Knowing the organizations is one thing. But what is important is understanding what each of these organizations does and whether any part of what they do is contrary to the mission of the Church, lest lead others into scandal.

Gravatar Oh - and Raymond mentioned something else on Teresa Tomeo's Catholic Connection just the other day....

He said some were stuffing paper acorns into the CCHD envelopes (not that he is advocating it).

Ok - to say that CCHD did not give any funding to ACORN for the 2008 FY, why were they funding them ever, given their propensity to partisanship, not to mention marxist ideals?

If the CCHD didn't know this, then what else don't they know?

Gravatar We haven't given to CHD in years and don't plan to start now or anytime in the near future.

Even if they don't fund ACORN they'll find some other far left group to fund - but not on my dime!

Gravatar Rellis, thanks for the link.

Egad. With all the trouble in Michigan, there were only 5 grants there? For the entire state? And only one in the Detroit area (and that for immigrant rights)?

Gravatar I assisted at Mass at a more liberal parish this past Sunday. The deacon spent at least 5 minutes praising the virtues of CCHD and how we need to give them money next week. Not a peep about their many vices.

Gravatar I'm wondering if this past Sunday's CHD donations were up or down?
Guess I'll have to wait for next Sunday's bulletin but I sure hope they got a lot less than previously.
