Yeah, a gradation. Between those who claimed it was a "murder of a baby" mortal sin, and those who just claimed it was an "unspeakable crime against humanity, the future, the family, and all parenthood" mortal sin.
Oooh, so fuzzy. Nothing but shades of gray, for sure.
But then, in our culture we commit all sorts of unspeakable crimes and then put them on TV and watch them. Meanwhile, Oedipus inadvertently did something wrong, and gouged out his eyes from the horror.

Joe's confused and so are the Catholics who respond to his rhetoric. We all probably know many family members and friends and parishioners, not to mention clergy and religious, who have fallen into this group. We can only pray for better catechesis and that more people will grow in the desire to learn their faith.

Setting aside the obvious incorrectness of what Biden said, I had another thought, as someone who is something of a (minor) political insider.
What kind of Catholic candidate, who is trying to attract Catholic swing voters, would do so by distancing himself from the most popular pope in anyone's memory?

"I'm totally at home with the Catholicism that I was raised in and this whole culture of social responsibility, reaction to abuse of power, the whole notion that there is collective civic responsibility."
So when the Supreme Court declares the abortion-restricting laws of all 50 states to be unconstitutional, with barely a pretext of reference to the Constitution at all ("auras of penumbras of meaning"), where was Catholic Joe opposing that abuse of power? Aren't Senators supposed to be defending their states' prerogatives in the federal system?

Jeff Miller, Paul VI issued Humanae Vitae. However, John XXIII did issue Veterum Sapientia, so I guess Joe Biden prefers to speak Latin. This guy is a clown. And the press dares to criticize Sarah Palin? Give me a break. Tom

He's ba-ack. Back to strangle Catholic theology. Back to burble and babble and say stuff that forces the campaign to go into What He Meant To Say Mode. He would be amusing were it not for the times we live and the gravity thereof. A sneak preview of how he'd trigger international incidents every other week. Ah, Joe. Running your mouth again. Maybe there should be an official cutoff date- after 20 years in the Senate, no presidential runs. Joe's clocked 35. He's a fish out of his tank.

I think he's talking himself into public excommunication come the synod in November.
The bishops have already corrected him on this repeatedly and he continues. Now he's trying to drag the Popes down into his cesspool of heresy with him.

Seriously, just excommunicate the buffoon already. He's BEGGING for it.
If these heretics somehow slip into heaven with deathbed repentance, they all owe PROFUSE apologies to Pope John XXIII for their constant mischaracterization of him and abuse of who he really was.

eeekk. .. Joe Biden (and his bunch) truly is disgusting! It's so funny how so many people listen to politicians 'preaching' about Catholicism and refuse to listen to priests and those who dedicate their lives to being good faithful catholics. It's like listening to 'doctors' on Greys Anatomy talk about medicine instead of listening to real doctors talking about it.

I think the more this debate is brought into the public eye the better. The Biden's of the world have no defense but to hope they can squirm long enough for people to not really put it all together.
I wrote a blog post not too long ago about it as well: http://www.fallibleblogma.com/in...ic-politicians/
In the end you have The Church (via the bishops and history) proclaiming what THE CHURCH teaches...and then you have politicians and the media who think that Church teaching is some sort of relativistic democracy of the "enlightened" telling the world what the Church teaches. Let's see...who should we believe?

I hope my memory is correct. In his "Journal of a Soul", Blessed John XXIII shared a life long practice. On waking, he would mediate on Death, Judgment, Heaven, Hell. I pray that Mr. Biden, Mr. Kennedy , Mr. Kerry and other "admirers" of Blessed John XXIII take the time to truly know him and follow his path.

Hahaha. This too stupid that it's funny. I don't know what faith Biden has been practicing all alone. They can debate all they want, but the Church has always maintained the same stand. Abortion is killing. When you kill an innocent baby willingly, there's no gradation. Anytime, anywhere, for whatever reason.

It's beyond sad that an argument this badly confused could be put forward by a senator who is Catholic, let alone one who has a serious chance of becoming vice president of your country, but is it really necessary to call Biden an idiot?

I just did a little research on Anti-Pope John XXIII & after seeing his coat of arms I am sure that this is the John XXIII he was refering to. The Anti-Pope's arms shows a leg & foot on it, appropriate for 1 who puts his foot in his mouth as much as Biden does.

After so many public corrections the first time, he is clearly thumbing his nose at the bishops with his obstinate misrepresentation of the faith.
Until serious sanctions start getting applied to people JB, things are not going to change.
It doesn't help that dissident theologians have been aiding people into distorted views. The bishops, and ultimately the Church itself, needs to get these people off their "good Catholic standing" platforms. Biden wouldn't have a leg to stand on if there weren't any priests and theologians publicly saying many of the same things.
If you are disturbed by it, make acts of reparation by spending time before the Blessed Sacrament.

Well, I'm not too sure of that. It's often the martys for Christ who die terrible deaths, but anticipate a glorious ever after.
I'd be more apt to say that those (liberal or not) who advocate abortion and know what it is (how can they not) face an unpleasant afterlife.

I think it can reduce culpability. But that is neither here nor there. I guess my real point is that it is better to say that Joe Biden is wrong, deadly wrong and scandalously wrong and showing why rather than getting hung up on the motive for his error.

Diane, Cdl. George has mentioned that the excommunication of Biden, Pelosi and their ilk is one of the topics of serious discussion for the USCCB meeting this November. I think Biden is making the case for them. I haven't heard any of the bishops who warned him before speak up again. He may be all out of warnings. We'll see. One thing is for sure, Biden is putting all of his buddies in a precarious position. But, they probably want to be Protestants anyway. It's easier to believe what you want that way.
