I just think it is lame. The beginning had potential...then it just got boring and stupid. The bobblehead isn't even funny. It takes a lot to make a bobblehead of the pope not funny. They just failed miserably.

Gravatar I would have preferred to see the Archdiocese issue a simple statement applauding the creativity and cleverness of the ad and merely pointing out that the next time Metro uses a papal bobblehead, it would be properly dressed.

That would have been a classy response that would have conveyed the same message without appearing to be overly sensitive. I would like to see the ADW ask Metro to reinstate the ad because it wasn't religiously or morally inoffensive, but merely poorly costumed.

Gravatar I actually own that bobblehead! My Protestant brother-in-law gave it to me as a gift. He asked my wife beforehand if I would be offended, and she said I would think it is funny (and I did). I still have it in my office.

I thought the video was cute and not at all offensive (loved the use of Latin!).

Gravatar Really, this is where the Archdiocese decides it's going to draw a line!? Of all the things!
Oh, and the the only thing about the bobblehead's dress that is incorrect is the red zucchetto. The bobblehead features the Pope wearing the traditional white cassock with red mozzetta. So they didn't get the zucchetto right, who cares? It wasn't exactly malicious.

Gravatar I found the film mildly amusing. It really does make catholics look bad when we are so uptight about things like this. I'm glad that someone make a copy of the video.

Gravatar Tha just seemed to be a knee jerk reaction on the Archdiocese part, unfortunately. Too bad they over reacted. It really was not offensive, just getting the point across.*sigh*. BTW Thomas, thanks for the great coverage on the Pope's visit to USA!!

Gravatar I found it amusing, and not at all worthy of all the controversy it's getting. More people will see it now simply because the Archdiocese said take it down.

Gravatar I though the ad was cute.

Gravatar I think the Pope himself would laugh. Like the Latin, as would B16.
BTW, where can I subscribe to Car and Pontiff?

Gravatar It just goes to show you that not every caricature is a Nast[y] cartoon. The Archdiocese should get a sense of humor.

Gravatar I suppose it could be "belittling the Pope"!
Actually I found it rather odd, this little bobbling figure riding around on the Metro, going about his business, getting ready for the mass. Not sure what the point is, or just why it was pulled. It could be "offensive" mainly because it's rather silly, but I agree, pulling it just makes Catholics look overly picky. On the other hand, if it were Billy Graham or Barrack Obama would it be offensive?

Gravatar Is the Archdiocese of Wash DC really that out of touch with reality? First of all, it had no intention of being disrespectful, and personally I don't think it had any incidental disrespectfulness about it, either.

By making a big deal out of this, they are ensuring that waaaaaaaaay more people see it than it's original, intended audience...plus the AP gets to show Catholics as being uptight, humorless frumps.

Maybe if the bobblehead Pope had been wearing his tye-dyed vestments it would have been okay? I actually think he looks very "papal", although I really know nothing about vestments, and it doesn't really look like him.

A commenter on another blog said he wrote a letter to the Metro thanking them for being responsive to the Archdiocese, but sorry that the Archdiocese had asked them to remove the ad. I thought that was a great idea.

Gravatar I thought this ad was creative and downright hilarious. I mean... Car & Pontiff? What's not to like?

Maybe the archdiocese would have preferred the Metro to take a more "inside the box" advertising technique and portray the Mass Pass being used by some attractive and scantily clad young ladies, just like everything else in America? That would certainly be less offensive than a bobblehead B16, right? Oh, wait...
